Best app for viewing AVIs

Quicktime ain't cutting it.

By setting my iBook to max processor power, I can now watch some AVIs smoothly, but many still ffeeze and go, freeze and go. I need an app that's more sophisticated than QT, maybe (and I don't know what I'm talking about) one that lets me adjust the quality down so I can at least get through the show without missing captions and such.

Is there an application that does a better job with these?

Thanks!!!

Hrumph--big surprise! AVI is a garbage format.

From:

[en.wikipedia.org]

"AVI is considered by many to be an outdated container format. There is significant overhead when used with popular MPEG-4 codecs (XviD and DivX, for example), increasing file size more than necessary. The container has no native support for those codecs' modern features like B-Frames. To circumvent this problem, cumbersome hacks (programming) are used, causing incompatibilities in some players. Hacks are also used to implement subtitles"

I can't recall ever coming across anything in AVI format that I had to watch.

I will d/l VLC and give it a try. Have Mplayer haging about somewhere.
I since discovered opening the files in real player solves the immediate problem.

VLC is processor-intensive. It's likely that mplayer will play with fewer dropped frames.

I disagree with the poster who claimed that .avi files are "garbage". It's amazing that many of the movies found on the Net are about 700MB and, when viewed on a large monitor or TV in FullScreen mode they are FLAWLESS in quality. In contrast, whenever I DL an .mpg file it's huge and not nearly as good in quality or sharpness. Mpg type files take up a LOT more space to achieve the same quality as .avi files.

I've seen some avis and HD avis that were stunningly good.

As for VLC being processor intensive, I''ve noticed that WMV and QT hiccup regularly during some of my computer evolutions where VLC ingores all.

I don't know if that's a function of it being processor intensive, but I often use it for QT files as well.

You're confusing the avi container with the encoded content within it. The movies you are downloading are more than likely divx or mp4s that are put into an avi container for broadest acceptance. The garbage comment is referring to the fact that when inside an avi container, your flawless movies are larger in filesize, use more overhead and have a limited feature set.

Think of avi like a QuickTime .mov, in which the video encoding could be Sorenson, Cinepak, mp4, h.264, etc. The encoding will determine size and quality.

.avi, .mov, or .mpg is just a format.

Think of them as a hardcopy publication. One may be a 3 ring binder, one may be a large print hardback book, and the third may be a paperback. All can contain the pages with the same words. But one is more compact and portable, and frequently easier to read. Oh, it isn't the .avi...
