How many Time top 50 gadgets have you owned?
Posted by: sekker
Date: May 04, 2016 09:40PM
[time.com]

I have owned 7 - actual products with the specific posted models (i.e. I did not own an original iPod - though I did own an iPod Gen3, but I did buy an original iPhone and iPad).

Commodore 64 seems to be forgotten by the modern press, glad it was not forgotten here.

7 exact models. I opted in 2 or 3 models later for a number of other ones but didn't buy the first gen. specified in the list.

A very weird list.

A Canon calculator, not an HP RPN calulator.

Really?

People still use the 12C.

I think ~5 original and another 5-10 very close models: for example, I own a second gen iPod, does it count? I own iPad 4, iPhone 5, do these count? I don't own a Nest, but I have a EcoBee (still need to install it, maybe soon). Does that count? similar with iBook, Mac, Nokia cell phone, Palm Pilot, etc.

I count about 9.

But the list is very specific in some cases, and very broad in other. Example: "Polaroid Camera" mentions the "OneStep" and the 1970s, without even mentioning earlier Polaroid cameras, and has a photo of a Polaroid Spectra that didn't come out until 1986.

They were similarly vague on dialup modems and a few other products.

Perhaps not the best possible list.

two to be exact (ipad and US Robitics modem), the family owned a Polaroid as EVERY family in the 60s/70s and a I had a couple of later model entries (trinitron etc) but overall, I was not jumping on any of that tech when it was new and fresh. THe ipad and the trinitron were bought used.

Of "all time"? Really?

How did they define "gadget"?

What about the Gutenburg press? Gadget?

Sadly, well over half, though that includes a few were not early adopted (and a couple I'm not sure of the exact model compared to the list) and a few that Baby Buzz owned while he was still under the age of majority... (OK, so he's technically old enough to vote and drink in all 50 states, he still seems like a kid to us) who helped w/ the gaming stuff, Kindle and the Blackberry. FYI, I was tasked (by dear old mom, R.I.P.) to be the family videographer when Baby Bro (who was working at Apple back in the 80's) had his first kid, and I bought the funky red JVC videocam to capture memories of the little brat-to-be. Mom reimbursed me for the purchase, and after a couple of days of shooting we gave the camera to Baby Bro after torturing him w/ it just enough to think it really wasn't for him. Several years later, when Baby Buzz hatched it was re-gifted back to us to return the torture.

20 very near misses, about five on the nose.

First iPod, first iPhone, first iPad, the SX70 (and three other models before that), Kodak Brownie.

Maybe four or five of the exact models. A good 20-25 at least for clones or follow-on versions.

Including Google Glass is stupid, as is excluding both the TRS-80 Model 1 and the Apple II.

Quite a few but they were WAY too brand and model specific.

I had a walkman and diskman but not those.
I had an old school Nokia but not that model.

Very odd choices too...

Only two actual models. The Atari 2600, and iPad 1st generation.

A few near misses, but no cigar.

Some really odd choices, overly specific selections, and stunning omissions.

I don't know how any list of influential gadgets could omit the LaserWriter, or laser printers in general.

DTP wouldn't exist without it, and it was the killer app that allowed GUIs to gain traction.

That's also clearly not a photo of an '88 DeskJet/DeskWriter.

And the USR Sportster? I think Hayes, if it still existed, would have an issue with that.

The list looks like it was compiled by a couple people who were around for that stuff, but with failing memory, and a bunch of kids who have no experience to draw from.
