Been sailing some rough waters with old Comcast these last few months...Im wondering what the best way to test my internet speed is without having spend money.

How to do?

And, What should typical real world Comcast signals be?

Comcast just upgraded my line this week. [forums.macresource.com]

I just used [elkgrove.speedtest.frontiernet.net] and got a 10 second burst rate of 26948 kbps download and 360 kbps upload.

Damn, I did the same Elgrove site, and only got:

Download Speed: 680 kbps (85 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 107 kbps (13.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Can that be right?

Thanks, although it was my original modem, was testing another one. But now using a local LOS ANGELES SITE for the speed test I get:

Download Speed: 5719 kbps (714.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 356 kbps (44.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

will try the other cable modem, and see if it works the same, while still under provisional status from Time Warner (Havent given them the mac address yet)

Will see.

put the other exact Motorola Surfboard 5120 on and got

Download Speed: 716 kbps (89.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 122 kbps (15.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
at the same Los Angeles server I got the 5719 a few minutes ago.

Putting original fast speed back on again:

Download Speed: 5720 kbps (715 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 357 kbps (44.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Will have to call Time Warner and see if I was to register the mac address would I get the same speed as the faster one.

5700-6800 average for semi regional sites and usually in the mid to high 300's for uploads.

My internet still seems sluggish. Used to be very responsive, I never tested it before though. Could be some modern man impatience settling in, i dont think so though.

I hate comcast, the freelance service guys they use have a system for keeping their visit time down and daily visits (volume) up and ladders locked to the truck (they avoid going on the pole as much as possible). When a new person moves in or someone needs service, they unhook someone in the building who has a good line, leave that line hanging, and then plug the line they are working on into the good jack and then they split. I think they realize that doing that causes a new service call = more work.

It's happened about four or five times in the last 6 months or so. I witnessed it one time from window above the area where the wires come in to our property. I said something and he muttered something back and got in his truck split. Sure enough, i saw the first floor guy the next day..no cable/internet, waiting for the Comcast guy.

I had a new line installed one month ago and when i looked at it this time there were three triple splitters coming off of it. with a toal of six accounts on it. It's like all the wiring on the back of the building is evolving on it's own.
