Anyone here camping out at Best Buy tonight?
Posted by: wurm
Date: November 16, 2006 08:27PM
So my son just came in and told me that his good friend's older brother is camping out in the Best Buy parking lot tonight.

Me: "What for?"
Him: "He's getting a Playstation 3 and then selling it on eBay for about $1000."
Me: "Yeah, right. Fat chance."

So on a whim, I take a peek over at eBay. These are completed auctions.

And there are about nine pages of them. Hell, maybe I'll camp out there!

Some were camped out at the local Best Buy LAST NIGHT when I stopped by about 7 pm. Might as well hang an "I'm a moron" sign around your neck.

Completed auctions, not paid auctions. Consider me skeptical. I can see $2000, maybe $2500. $9K is insane. Trust me if you have $9K to blow on a video game console you have better sources than eBay to get one.

I passed by BB earlier to day when it was storming rain. Funny seeing all the campers bundled inside their tents. I just laughed.

Keep this in mind: A $600 investment in Apple in 2002 is now worth $12,930. No long nights on the cement required.

Man, forget about it if you haven't got yourself a spot by now (although, you never know).

BB has the most allocations it seems (as far as local B&M's are concerned). Numbering about 20 plus. WM (et. al.) seem to be getting shorted, at about 4 or so at each store.

It seems you had to start getting in line yesterday at the slowest locations. I wasn't willing to take a day off from work to do this. At that time, the highest auctions seemed to be going for $2K. I've called all the central Arkansas outlets (WM, BB, Target) and they are all saturated.

I'm not one for hype, but it would have been neat to 'experience' this cultural phenomenon. This is of course beyond the resale aspects of this thing.

Best we can do at this point is to try and get one when some retailers start selling them at midnight (as obtained from elsewhere on the Internet):

I just came from town and they were camped out at Best Buy, Target and Walmart.

We had a wind storm Tuesday night and they had an article in the local paper today about the ones camped at Best Buy getting blown around.

It would be an experience but I'll let some one else have it.

Now this person on Craigslist has the right idea.

playstation 3 (#1 place in line) - $1200
Buy my position in line at Target in North Attleboro. I am in the #1 spot. Come to Target and take my space. Tickets will be given out Friday morning, so this offer is good Thursday evening only.

Hey, just sayin there is a more intelligent way to make free money which doesn't require giving away two days of your life.

Best bet is to pay some unemployed idiot, who can't do ebay or craigslist, about 200 bucks to wait in line.

Ever hear about what lobbyists pay placeholders to stand in line for them all day? Or is that what the corporations pay the lobbyists to pay the placeholders...?

My head hurts.

here ya go: [southjersey.craigslist.org]

And here you go.

Hi,
I am looking for 3 people to wait in line for a 60GB Playstation 3 ONLY from sometime on wednesday to friday. Will not accept a 20GB. If you don't get a 60GB, you will not get paid, I repeat will not get paid. I am able to pay $250.00 per person. Must have a Car in case the store we go to has a line already.

Ah yes, the old give-a-deadbeat-loser-your-credit-card trick.
I'm sure that would work out well.

No, he/she holds your place in line, you show up a half hour before store opens with the fee.
Used to do that all the time for concert tickets, buy the max amount of tickets and sell them for $$$$!

Too late, there was already a fight somewhere in SoCal last night.

I know....Paul F and I are dancing.....

My wife can't think outside of the M$ box when it comes to using a computer, but my 2 stock purchases in 2002 are worth a years pay each over the last 4 years. That both pisses her off, and makes her giddy.

Someone has a sense of humor.

Playstation 4 (Four) - No Arm - Just a Leg!!!

That's right - a PS4!!! Oh sure, they may not be out now, but they will be in a year or so, but I'll go wait in line right now. What the heck, I don't have a life anyhow!! And, I sure like price gouging!!! I was going to charge an Arm & a Leg but I thought you would need the arm to play the game. So this is a one time offer & you heard it here first (but I know it won't be last) A PS4 for just one LEG!!! CALL NOW!! 1st come first served. & Oh Yeah!! I'm first in Line!!! LOL!!!

They were camped out here since Tuesday night.
Police detail right along-side. Looked almost like a party.
At least this year has been warm.
Supposedly stores in Cali opened very very early.
Same thing last year. Very cold.
They used cars for wind-breaks.
I didn't go by CC to see if there were any campers.

How about a shooting?

I don't have the link handy, but I read this morning about 2 thugs robbing a store line in Conn. and shooting a guy who refused to give up his cash.

Yeah. Here you go.

PUTNAM, Conn. (AP) - Two armed thugs tried to rob a line of people waiting to buy the new Playstation 3 gaming console early Friday and shot one who refused to give up the money, authorities said.

The two confronted 15 to 20 people who were in line outside a Wal-Mart store shortly after 3 a.m. and demanded money, said Lt. J. Paul Vance, a spokesman for the state police. The new Sony consoles are selling for around $500 to $600.

"One of the patrons resisted. That patron was shot," Vance said.

[snip]

A Best Buy in Boston, aware it had only 140 of the consoles, got smart - its employees gave out tickets to the first 140 people in line so everyone could go home.

I saw a live report on the 11 p.m. Indy news and the TV reporter was basically partying
with the #1 tent that had about six people in it (guys and gals)

They had food and music and were having a good time and no fights.
They said everybody knew each other by their number not names.

The Circuit City had a big sign saying that they would have exactly 28 units to sell
so if you were not #1 to 28 you might as well go home,

The BestBuy manager they interviewed acted like it was a big secret
"We will not know the exact number of units released to us for distribution
until they are released from central blah blah blah ..."

I think he just wanted the hype where CC were being honest and saying
you are out of luck - go stand in another line :- )
