OT: Lost A Family Member Today

Hey all,

I'm posting this here because there seems to be a lot of animal lovers in this forum. It's 7 am here and no one is awake for me to talk to, just want to get this out.

I had to put my 10 year old puppie dog Rosie down early this morning. She was very special to us and everyone who ever came in contact with her could feel her love. I don't think pound for pound there was ever a more gentle creature on this planet.

Rosie started having difficulty breathing last night so I took her to the vet emergency room. The prognosis was not good and she was clearly suffering. I had to make the call on my own and it was so very difficult to do. I've never had to go through this type of thing before and I'm having a hard time dealing with it.

I haven't told my daughters yet and I dread doing so. Rosie was a their friend, their gaurdian, their jungle gym.

She was an integral part of our family and I miss her.

Very sorry to hear. It must be particularly tough to make that decision on short notice. We'll be facing it in a matter of months, but we have time to get used to the fact.

Be well, and give the kids an extra hug.

I've had to do exactly what you have described above and you have my empathy.

Rest assured that time heals all, and looking back on my experience, the search for our next pet with my daughter and son is one of my more cherished memories.

Rest in Peace, Rosie.

It is never easy to lose a family member - but be comforted by the final gift you were able to give her - ending her suffering.

It will take a while, but eventually, you will be able to remember the good times and forget the awful end.

Condolences to you and your daughters.

I tear up every time I hear of this. It never gets easier to hear about, and I dread the day that I have to do this.

You have my deepest sympathy. I am very sorry for your loss. Rosie looks happy, loved and proud of her life in those pictures. I know she was loved and will be missed.

First post I am reading this morning - not how I was hoping to start my day, she looks like she was a very sweet dog. So sorry for your family's loss and with such short notice - that makes it so much harder.

Hang in there - your Rosie was obviously loved very much.

I remember our first Scottie dog. I was out sledding on a cold December Saturday. When I came home for lunch Mom told me that she had been put down, vagaries of age having taken the joy out of her life. All five of us went to church the next day with very red eyes.

It is just no fun to lose such a friend as you've had. Their passing leaves a huge void, not only in your hearts, but in the house. Their presence is sorely missed. But as noted before time heals the immediacy of the loss. But, fortuneately, you never forget them. Rosie will always be part of your memories. If you are like we are, this becomes a marker point down the road. "Did that happen before or after Rosie?"

You are right that there are a LOT of pet lovers here and I dare say that every one of us feels your sadness on this day.

What a tough thing to deal with. Still it's better to not make your loved pet suffer. Remember the joy of her life with you.

Very sorry for your loss. Through the years, we've had to make that same decision 4 times and it doesn't get any easier, even knowing that it would have to be done.

bfd thinks these little critters never live long enough, but in the time they do, they sure maximize their impact on us.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Our pets are with us for such a brief time. They leave us with their love and companionship, and memories. I hope they take with them the sense that they've been well loved and cared for.

Karsen,

So sorry to hear of your loss. This can never be a "good" decision, even if it is the "best" one. We struggle to say goodbye... and thank you, all at the same time. And there is never enough time.

We can only hope that we gave them in return some fraction of the joy they brought in to our lives.

Best wishes to you and your family at this difficult time.

I also wanted to say that Rosie came into my life due to very unusual circumstances which I feel contributed to our bond. This may sound crazy, but I thought I'd share the story with you if you care to hear it.

I had gone to sleep on a Friday having no interest in getting a dog at all. I had a dream that we had to go to our local Humane Society and get a Bulldog. As soon as I woke up I told my wife about my dream. She thought I was nuts (which I kinda am!) but she agreed to take a ride to the shelter with me.

As we pulled up to the shelter there were cars everywhere and flashing lights of police cars directing traffic. My wife and I wondered what the heck was going on. As we got closer we saw they were having an "Adopt-A-Thon".

We walked around looking in the cages for a Bull Dog but there wasn't one. We then bought a few items from their charity drive and walked back to the car. As we pulled away one of the workers came running out and waved us down.

She asked if we saw any animals we liked and wanted to adopt. I told her we were looking for a Bull Dog and we didn't see one. She responded by saying they DID have a Bull Dog that was just brought in, but they didn't have room to keep her on site so she was at a foster home.

After a couple of phone calls, a meeting with the doggie foster mom was arranged and we met Rosie, the dog in my dreams. We actually had to "try out" for adoption because she was in bad shape and the foster mom, who we later found out was on the board of directors for the Hummane Society, wanted to make sure Rosie went to a good home.

From what we were told Rosie had been picked up in another town and was brought into a kill shelter. She had been abused and was in very rough shape. She was ON the table and ready to be put down when shelter workers saw something special in Rosie and decided to give her a stay of execution while they searched for a place for her to live. They made some calls and all of the shelters were full, but the one near us was able to work out a temporary home with the foster home.

The people who were going to put her down at the shelter actually gave Rosie her name, while she was on the table to be put down. They were watching Rosie Odonell on TV.

I know it sounds like a load of BS; I wouldn't tell this story to people before because it made me seem like some sort of whack job who dreams' become reality or something. It's all true though, my wife can verify every bit. Just felt like sharing it so other people can see how special Rosie was to us.

I am also very sorry for your loss. We have two miniature schnauzers, Max 3 years old and Lady 2 years. Although we have had many dogs in the past that we loved, these two have become such an important part of our lives that I already dread the day that we will no longer have them with us. As I write this, Max is wrapped in his blanket and is snuggled between me and the arm of my recliner. Lady is sitting similarly with my wife. Our other equally loved and important family member is a big gray striped tomcat named Dave who as a tiny kitten picked us out several years ago when we visited the animal shelter.

The universe is way too complex a place for anyone to say with certainty that what you experienced with Rosie (in your dream and in finding her) is anything but legitimate. Einstein himself once said, "We can never understand it all." I personally believe that there are connections that we experience that we will never know the reason for, yet are no less real because they continue to keep us in a state of wonder.

You were a blessing in Rosie's life, and she to yours. There is still wonder as to why it ends this way, but no less thanks for the time you shared.

Thanks for sharing your story.
