iPhone won't charge

My mother is traveling out of state and her iPhone won't take a charge. All she sees is the battery icon on the screen. She tried two different cables and two different chargers with no luck. She made an appointment at the Apple store nearest her and they said her main board was fried and would cost $260 to replace. She is out of warranty on Verizon. What would you suggest I do? Buy a new phone from verizon, buy one used, something else?

Did she try restarting the phone via the restart dialogue or a hard restart using the buttons?

Which model and storage size of iPhone?
Is she on a subsidized phone plan, and if so, when is she due for a new phone?

It is an iPhone 5s 32 GB. It is under contract until 1/2018. She did try a hard reset. Thanks.

If it is under contract until 1/2018, wouldn't that mean she got it 1/2016?
If so, wouldn't it be under the 1 year Apple warranty?

Edit: if it is not still under the 1 year Apple warranty, and it needs to last another year and a half, then I might just get it fixed by Apple.

One trick used to be to heat the phone up to about 100 F. It can sometimes give the battery enough voltage that it will barely activate and start taking a charge.

They said the board was fried after having examined the phone ?
If so they likely blew out any belly button lint from the lightning plug socket .....

$260 is about what a decent shape used 5s goes for.
I'd be very tempted to do the logic board repair especially if she gets a fast turnaround at the applestore.
No applecare ?

I think contracts are two years aren't they? So she probably bought it in 2015. She gets back with the phone tomorrow and I'll go to verizon to verify. She did call verizon herself and they said it was out of warranty. No applecare.

my wife's iPhone 5S started having trouble charging too. Same story and cost quoted by Apple.

Ended up doing a double swap with my daughter.

The second 5S is pretty flaky charging in mophie cases. I'm starting to think Apple released the SE because of design issues on the 5S

This is something I would focus on first based on my personal experience.

Lint can collect inside the lightning socket on the phone and each time the cord is plugged in, it pushes and compresses that lint into a corner. Over time so much collects that the cord cannot be plugged in far enough to make contact, and it won't sync or charge. It's totally a mechanical problem inside the socket with connector fit, so switching cables doesn't make a difference.

Can the computer see the phone over USB? That will help identify if it's just a battery/charging problem, or a lightning connector problem.

If it seems like lint is a problem, blowing it out won't work, this stuff is packed in tight. You need to look in there with a flashlight and magnifying glass and use something strong an pointy (pointy tweezers, a pick, toothpick, safety pin, straightened paper clip) to start digging into the compacted lint piles to break them up so that you can blow them out. When you think you've got it all, you probably haven't, go back and look/dig for more.

Read the comments for this video of how to replace the charging connector, many people find that there is nothing wrong with the connector, it's just packed with lint.

Thanks, I'll dig into that charging port as soon as I get my hands on the iPhone.

You don't need to go to Verizon. Just log in of you know the phone number and the owner info.

I had the lint problem on my 5s. A toothpick did the trick.

Dave,

When was the phone actually purchased? It may be covered by a credit card's "double the manufacturer's warranty" program.
