iphone 6 fell in pool, no iCloud backup of photos

Unfortunately my wife dropped her iPhone 6 in our pool this morning. It was not set to send photos to the cloud.

She had just taken many pictures of our daughters graduation and last dance recital.

Bag of rice immediately, took it to the apple store today and the genius tried turning it on, no indication of life.

He said pictures are lost, $299 for a new one. Told us to be cautious about using US Cellular protection plan.

We have US Cellular with protection plan, phone is 3 months old. US Cellular said it will be a 3rd party refurbished phone with 90 day warranty.

Anyway, I am going to open phone and put a fan on it and hope for 1 last power up to get photos.

Any other suggestions?

So it was only in rice for a few hours? That remedy needs at least overnight or days, not just a few hours...

Do you have any other iDevice that has photo stream set up where you might have DL the pics to the photo stream? This is different from iCloud backup.

Yeah it happened pretty fast at the store. We stopped in to see if there was any way they could retrieve photos. He said looks dry and tried to turn it on.

Hind sight I should have stayed home, probably lost our opportunity.

I did use my islack to open it and have it in my home built holder with a fan on it. I will leave it open for a day or so with fan running and hope for the best. Being open will help it dry better, but I am pretty sure it is done. Seems odd that they can't get stuff off the memory.

No, only other iPhones but they have different iCloud accounts.

"Seems odd that they can't get stuff off the memory"

I'm sure it is possible, but not by them, and for something that trivial (nothing personal, no offense meant)

I opened it up in less than 2 minutes, my wife said why don't they do that for people. I said "They want you to buy a new phone"

I will be kicking myself for a while for going there today.

This google search "retrieve photos dead iPhone" brings up many possibilities, including several software packages that apparently can access the memory of a nonoperational iPhone. Worth a try I would say.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Yeah, us cellulars insurance stinks. Paid nine bucks a month for each line, went years with no claims. When needed they wanted a $250 deductible to get a crappy refurb phone. I dumped it and refuse it every time now. Seems like every time I might have made a claim I would have at least one of my lines ready to upgrade and that was the cheaper route.

I saved one claim when I bought an identical used phone for half what the deductible would have been. It seemed like i was throwing money away and their coverage really only makes sense at the very front end with an expensive new model phone.

Applecare plus is a better deal if you feel the need, $129 for the coverage and $99 deductible for damage. Coverage is for two years, allows two damage incidents but it doesn't cover a lost phone.

My oldest son just went through the same thing when his 6 plus fell off, got ran over with the tire of the riding mower and broke the screen. Had no backup and could not back it up afterward because the screen was unreadable and unresponsive to make a connection with the computer. Could not make a claim because they would just exchange the phone and his hundreds of photos taken the first year of his sons life would be gone. Backup is so important! In his case we were able to just put in a new screen and it worked fine again, and then we backed it up right away.

You don't have to depend on flaky iCloud for this. I have been using Photo Transfer App with my iDevices since 2012. It just works. Of course, you still have to get in the habit of transferring photos to your computers regularly. I don't shoot anything too precious with my phone, but if I did, I'd offload the pix promptly, as I do with dSLR pix.

You might want to set up photo sharing in the future, so that another iDevice can retrieve any photos that are "shared."

[support.apple.com]

Turn on iCloud Photo Sharing

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and turn on iCloud Photo Sharing.
On your Mac, go to System Preferences > iCloud > Options next to Photos, then select iCloud Photo Sharing.
On your Apple TV, go to Settings > iCloud > iCloud Photos Settings and turn on iCloud Photo Sharing.
On your Windows PC, open iCloud for Windows and select Photos. Click the Options button to verify that iCloud Photo Sharing is on, then click Apply.

If another household member also has an iDevice, you could even do a quick Airdrop of critical photos.
