Oh Noes! I've Got Bunnys in My Onions!

So the last couple of nights, Louie has been obsessed I mean extremely focused on my bucket of walking onions.

Louie

Bucket of onions...

Tonight I found out why. There's three (at least) baby bunnies living in the tub under the onions. They are so well camouflaged that the first few times I looked I didn't see them. They are in the upper left under the hay.

I didn't shoot (yes, I thought about using the AR-15 to protect myself from the killer bunnies, but instead decided on the dreaded SX-40) them directly because they were pretty much very young and already terrified by Louie just sniffing them. I barricaded the area and put a handful of hay on them as a bit of cover because Louie had gotten into the tub and trampled their cover (the onions) sniffing them out. Now that I know they are there, I'll keep the dogs away until they leave the nest.

This year has been packed with bunnies but so far they haven't done any damage to my garden which is in a different area than the onions. I'm guessing bunnies may not like onions as food but they make good cover for a nest.

Louie as all Basset hounds, was bred to hunt bunnies. It seems he's found his calling but he's not a hunter. He found the bunnies and was very gentle with them and I'm good with that.

DISCLAIMER: No bunnies (or onions) were harmed making this post.

Couple of years ago, I was showing my new enclosed garden space to my father in law. At the time there was grass runways between the planting areas. At one point I took a step back onto the grass, and there was this high-pitched squealing commotion.

I had no idea what was going on, until I looked a little closer, and found like three baby bunnies tucked under the tall grass where I was stepping. Momma bunny wasn't there, but she had obviously had the NERVE to make a nest INSIDE my fenced garden enclosure.

That was with "rabbit fencing". Since I switched to hardware cloth (1/2 inch square holes), I've had no more bunnies.

Only moles, or some other devious tunnellin' creatures I've never actually seen (other that their "hole-y" destruction).

All I can say is that it's a good thing I don't do this for a living.

Our neighbor just trapped some rabbits and had animal control collect them. Seems like a lot of trouble for a few rabbits.

I ran over a nest with the lawnmower. Didn't even notice till I almost stepped on them. They were down low, so weren't touched.

Turns out the mamma bunnies don't stick around, except maybe come by to nurse now and then. Leaves the baby bunnies pretty vulnerable, it seems to me. Our cat Pollux used to like them for snacks. Then one night he never returned, so I reckon something got him instead. "Nature red in tooth and claw."

Predators can find a full-grown rabbit more easily than the tiny bunnies in the nest. Mom can't do much to protect them should a predator find them, anyhow, so nature has her keep her distance for all but maybe five minutes a day, in order to avoid attracting attention to the nest. Rabbit mother's milk is extremely rich so they only need to nurse once a day. I learned all this when a pair of "male" rabbits I was babysitting had babies (!!) and I called a vet when it appeared that the mother was ignoring her litter.

there's a bunny explosion around these parts, right in the city. they're everywhere! my dog goes bananas when he sees one, but sort of knows he won't catch it; his chase after it is sort of half-hearted now. I guess dogs do learn, after a while.
