With today's technology. Say an AC router. What is a realistic wireless download speed if you had gigabit speed via a direct connection?

I get 110 Mbps running the Fast.com test with my phone and it's not currently running on an AC router. When I was using an AC router, it said I had a 433 Mbps connection but the storage in my phone couldn't read or write fast enough to properly test. My wired computer gets speeds around 126 Mbps. I am pretty sure my speeds are limited by my internet connection and not my wireless speeds.

Samsung was running tests a year ago that showed 5G speeds could reach 800 Mbps.

most likely your internet connection is the bottleneck, not the WiFi or Ethernet. Even if you had 1 Gbps internet ISP connection, few servers would let you download that fast.

I'm getting close to 900Mbps connected direct to the modem. Connected wirelessly to my new AC router about 20 feet away in another room I'm getting 150 something Mbps on my MBP and a shade under 100Mbps on my iPhone.

I'm not complaining. This is still faster than my wired TWC connection. Just wondering if that's about right or if I need to switch something around.

Which MBP and which router? Apple laptops didn't have AC until Late 2013 models. I don't think there were laptops from any manufacturer with dual antennas until Spring 2015 so the best you will ever see is 433 Mbps unless you find a dual antenna adapter, or you know for sure your setup is using 160 MHz channels on both the AP and client.

A Mid 2012 MBP likely won't ever get over 233 Mbps without using an AC dongle.

A 2012 MBP doesn't have 802.11ac. You'd need at least a late 2013.

But a good ac router will have lots of external antennas and MIMO and will likely improve your 802.11n speeds.

Ok. No worries here. Just wanted to make sure I was doing all I can to get the best speed. I'm going to mount the router on a wall in the hallway so it will be more out in the open. Ultimately, I'm going to turn my "Harry Potter" closet into a makeshift server room. Going to put all the networking stuff in there and run some ethernet drops under the house to some rooms like the office and the living room.
