Anybody here use an external DAC? I'm just learning a bit about what they are and how they are useful. What brands are supposed to be good? What kind of money does one get into?

Well, I use that old Onkyo (MH-33?). Works fine for me--better sound quality than I get from the internal DAC on my G4 tower.

What do you want to do with a DAC? If it's just for playback, there are a fair number of cheap ($25) usb DACs you can buy. And you could probably spend a couple thousand dollars, if you wanted to....

DACs go from hundreds to many many many thousands.

A very well respected and high-value example would be the Benchmark DAC.

It all depends on what you want to spend, and also what the rest of your system consists of (do you need it to be a computer interface as well, or pure DAC?). It may turn out that your money would be better spent upgrading speakers or other components first.
