Anybody ever had their fiberglass tub/shower refinished?

I was looking into this process. Here's an example of how it works (it's essentially epoxy paint): [www.miraclemethod.com]

Basically only 5-7 year warranties. I have two older fiberglass enclosures and to 'refinish' would be 400-500 each. I really don't want to cut 'em out...what a pain.

Anybody had this done before?

Is this for your rental? I would just replace the fiberglass tub/shower.

I've gotten quotes before, but I was scared off after some research. My understanding is that resurfaced tubs usually need additional work after 3-5 years for peeling and chipping. Your initial outlay of $500 dollars could double or triple over the years. Also, the paint is sprayed on and if they don't take great care you'll end up with tiny spatters all over your tile, floor and countertop. And read the warranty carefully -- it may not apply at all in a rental unit and it might be voided without the use of specific (expensive) cleaning products.

Have you considered acrylic bathtub inserts/liners?They usually come with a 1-year manufacturer warranty and a lifetime warranty from the installer against defects in materials or workmanship and typically last up to 15-20 years. They are the functional equivalent of getting a new tub, but with minimal fuss and perhaps 5 hours for the installation. Average cost is probably around $700 dollars.

I think that the liners also help hold the heat in a tub better, as they have a wee bit of dead airspace between them and the old tub. Even 1/4" of air, and the extra layer of acrylic will insulate some.

i'll look into the liners....this is for a house i am living in but will, eventually, be a rental. I'm not going to do the "refinishing"....

The current enclosures are in excellent shape...just dingy and a bad off-white. I'm going to try and clean the heck out of 'em and see what happens...if it doesn't turn out, i'll put in new ones..

thanks

We use a Clorox product that just dissolves soap scum like you wouldn't believe. Just wipe up with a normal sponge, and rinse a lot. If it is real porcelain, and not acrylic, a good cleaning will probably do the trick.

Even if the porcelain is a wee bit beat up and now slightly porous, if you get the grungy dark soap scum and crap out of the pores, it will look way better.
