I wanted peanut butter but all the corner stores around here seem to be constantly phasing out food.

Sorry folks, I'd much rather have mouse droppings and an occasional tragic disposal than a litter box.
Unfortunately the traps appear untouched.
This mouse appeared rather plump-- HAVE to get it.
They come in all over the place-- probably through the crawl space; usually when it's getting cold out. Trying to plug all the holes would be a losing battle.
No mad dog around here-- Chicago's been shrinking the ## of liquor licenses aggressively for years. The corner stores sell next to nothing-- no cigarettes either, most of 'em.

Two cats=no mice grinning smiley

We had a really bad problem with small field mice getting into the house and having lots of babies, just before we got BunBun & Boo. We haven't seen a mouse in the house since. I think they know better. They probably can get the scent of the cats and know to avoid the area, just a guess.

BunBun & Boo are well worth the hassle of a litter box and not just for their value as a mouse deterrent.

Remember where there's one, there is more.

Since all my cats died, I have had problems with mice every fall. I use the sticky glue traps. I think I have finally found the hole where they were coming in. I caulked it. Hope it works. But this is an old house and I probably don't have enough caulk to fill all the holes.

We used sticky traps baited with popcorn. Of course, you need a strong stomach to euthanize the trapped mouse or have a cruel streak to let them die a slow death.

I got a killer ferret, named Weasel, goes after them through the holes like a homing missile. No mice....

Usually get a few mice every fall, just after the combines run through the fields surrounding our house. I put bait in the crawlspace and some up in the attic; set traps on the main floor.

I sealed up around the foundation where I found any holes. It doesn't take much to let a mouse through.

No cats allowed here. I am highly allergic to them. Our dogs (bouviers) are no deterrent for mice. Mice know dogs don't want to work that hard for a bite to eat.

Malibu keeps this place clear of mice. I had a big problem before I got him. 150+yr old house with a dirt basement and pieces of granite for a foundation in some parts.
Now he gets one or two in the beginning of the fall and that's it. I have to look when he cries to come in and make sure he doesn't have one in his mouth. He imports live ones to play with since he can't catch any in here.

I used a haveaheart trap for a long time, but the mice got wise.

I bait my traps with peanut butter, seems to work real well. Some from an old jar that has sat in the corner so it has turned a bit seems to work best. Location of the trap is also very important. Mice like to move along edges of cabinets and walls, corners where these meet are good locations for the traps.

Peanut butter has worked for me in the past...

Fortunately, since I have Max around now, I haven't needed traps for mice.
The live other critters Max brings from the outside to the inside have needed other measures...
Chipmunks seem to love banana, by the way... (live cage trap, baited with banana, captures chipmunks every time...).

Would it be practical for you to borrow a cat for a couple days?
Some cats would even dispose of (most) of the corpse for you...
Max leaves the head and innards... (and might I add, YUCK!).

Put the traps along the baseboard with the trigger end against the wall. Then put something like a Kleenex box 3" from the wall right next to the trap. The mice will sometimes run right across the trigger and get caught even if they are not eating the bait.

My son and I had a mouse trapping contest in our garage this spring. Three different syles of trap and several baits. The only trpa to catch any mice (several) was the old fashioned type baited with liberal amounts of powdered hot chocolate mix. They loved that stuff!

Mmmm, bacon.

JoeH is right, traps should be placed in their path, along walls and edges. They rarely run across empty space unless it's a mad dash for cover. And place the traps in pairs, one facing each way, because you don't know from whence the mouse will come.

I have a good sense of where the mice travel and placed the traps accordingly, along baseboards. Bacon? Seriously? I will try the chocolate suggestion, a well as barriers to better steer it towards the traps. Peanut butter is not such a great idea really, even if I had nany, since I'd just eat the whole jar.

Chocolate... Cheese.. Bacon.. Peanut Butter...

Cripes.. it's a wonder the mice even live long enough to bother you!
No wonder the little buggers are always getting cancer in laboratory studies... it's not what they're testing... the mice are just unhealthy to begin with!!!

If you give a mouse a cookie, he will eat for a week. If you teach him how to order out for pizza, he will die from a heart attack like humans do.
