I hate, hate, hate them. How ironic that when I was a kid back in my home country, I considered them to be cute (and most people there still find them cute, since they are somewhat rare).

EDIT: they are definitely worse than 7 years ago when we moved here. They probably get smarter and meaner with each generation!

You've probably got other animals beside the Squirrels to deal with. Some kind of scent would be the first thing to try.

Ive tried it all. No scent works. No deterrent works except for an actual dead animal. No pellet gun or nerf gun works. They learn quick and scatter when they hear you coming. When you leave, they come right back. It's a futile effort.

Again, the only thing I have found that keeps them away is a dead animal. A snake accidentally got caught and died in our netting. I could not figure out why we were getting tomatoes until I found the dead snake. It all made sense. It happened again with a dead squirrel (accident on their part, not my doing). They stayed away until the carcass was removed, then came back with a vengeance.

IIRC, you live in NJ. You may be limited to a nerd or air soft gun. NJ is tough with regards to guns, including BB.

These are NOT wildlife. These are nasty pets that I don't want near my house. If they are "wild" then they can go live in the woods about 200 ft away.

From the link posted above: Squirrels, raccoons and other wildlife can return from translocations of 5, 10, or even 15 miles.

Unless your gun blows them to bits they'll just learn there's a two legged noise maker to avoid near their food supply.
They've got all day to wait for you to go back inside so they can forage in peace.

Our squirrel population is down to very few in part due to drought, hard Winters for foraging and gypsy moths have destroyed acorn production.

I take ours only a couple of miles but on the other side of a river and into woods. Who knows if they come back, but after I moved 3 a year ago we haven't been bothered. Maybe they're back but learned their lesson!

I have been using BB gun for years barely intimidates them much less hurt them.

that should be fun when the PSEG guy comes to read the gas meter, or when a neighbor's kid comes to get the ball they kicked over the fence.

If dead animals do it, start cruising the road for road kill. All you need is a shovel and bucket.

I had a similar Motion-Activated Yard Enforcer, which kinda worked. One issue I had was i originally used a cheap hose, and with the hose having full 125 psi water pressure for a long time and being in the sun, the hose expanded and finally broke.

And, of course, the squirrels got smart and learned to avoid it after awhile.
Remember, you'll also chase away birds if they also feed in that area.
But it does scare the heck out of cats who try to get the birds!!! LyleH

In answer tobyhecabove question: a real live dead animal. I think it's the smell more than anything else.

This is the only permanent cure.

Squirrels are rats with fluffy tails. Simple as that. If you live in New Jersestan though you can't easily buy even an airsoft gun, though that is likely the only non-lethal deterrent you might find. It will be a full time job though. A bucket full of dead squirrels is much more effective and efficient than spending 14 hours a day shooting them with non-lethal airsoft BBs.

I have a paintball gun.
They learn to run when they hear a door or window open and then watch from a safe distance .
They'll be back. Sometimes as soon as they watch the window or door close.

You can chase them with the ferocity a Jack Russell or Rat Terrier might. Learn to climb trees. That will really put a WTF expression on their little rat faces. Your neighbors might be watching phones in hand with the number for the men in white coats on file. Everyone keeps fit. Win-win.

Trapping and relocating animals is an issue in NY as well. Even feral cats are considered "free roaming animals" and all you can do is trap, get them spayed/neutered and, by law, return them to same location. It is illegal to release them elsewhere. It doesn't eveb matter if the presence of the "free roaming animal" endangers the life of the human(s) that own the property. It is illegal to relocate them. No issues the animals leave on their own. Squirrels fall into the same category. There is the question of enforcement, though.

Assuming Space traps squirrels and releases them elsewhere, someone has to be keeping an eye on his activities and report him to the authorities. Or, the authorities themselves will have to watch him and catch him in the act. And, unfortunately, if the squirrel population by him is like the on in my area (Long Island, NY), trapping and relocating will be a waste of time.

I could trap and relocate a squirrel each day and there will _always_ be more of them. Always.

sprinkle the area with squirrel treats until your the neighborhood squirrel god. Just let them come and be comfortable. Then wet the grass down and spread some treats. Put a 10x10 piece of chicken wire down and wire it in to a 120 outlet that is on a switch. Wait until they are basking in fat, happy glory and then fry the whole lot at once!

Air soft Pistol is what we have for the squirrels. It is not very accurate but even hitting near them scares them off the feeders for awhile
Your cats will not go near the squirrels. The squirrels like to taunt the cats and mess with them

The solution is the answer that you specifically ruled out unfortunately. Paintball guns will work as a distraction so long as you are willing to stand in your back yard all day every day. It won't make them leave. They'll just wait for you to go to the bathroom. My wife was giving me a hard time about hunting squirrels until I pointed out that just like rats, they are an infection vector for Bubonic Plague. She then said shoot at will...

We had an infestation of Red Squirrels several years ago and it was not fun. These cute little critters can do some major damage. I tried every humane way possible to remove them to no avail. They got into our attic and were chewing their way above the ceiling in our dining room. I decided to use rat traps (same ones in the photo from ztirffritz) and caught all 11 using peanut butter. Never had a problem since.

.....inquiring minds wanna' know......squirrel dinner for a month......???

As suggested above, a cat would be a great squirrel deterrent. Best of all, though, is a small dog of the terrier persuasion. They love protecting a yard from vermin of all sorts.
