Why is QuickTime plug in crashing?

Any time I try to listen to a preview like in pinkoos thread below, this plug in crashes.

The OS moved my Quicktime Plug in into the disabled plugins folder some time ago. I thought it was no longer supported by mac os??

this. And it's just really out-of-date. I'm seeing issues with it, too, on Sierra.
