That would be a neat project though (have to admit that I'm partial to MAKING gifts for people that appreciate them...).
Only suggestion I have is to stay away from some of the hardwoods... particularly those in the Rosewood or Cocobolo family. They can be toxic to some people.
I have gotten a poison oak like reaction to either cocobolo or bocote... can't remember which, though I'm sure I'll figure it out next time I make a knife handle or pistol grips out of one or the other.
I wonder if Fine Woodworking magazine might have an index that would turn up something useful?
