That would be a neat project though (have to admit that I'm partial to MAKING gifts for people that appreciate them...).

Only suggestion I have is to stay away from some of the hardwoods... particularly those in the Rosewood or Cocobolo family. They can be toxic to some people.
I have gotten a poison oak like reaction to either cocobolo or bocote... can't remember which, though I'm sure I'll figure it out next time I make a knife handle or pistol grips out of one or the other.

I wonder if Fine Woodworking magazine might have an index that would turn up something useful?

Keep Googling. The kind of wood to use is important, I don't have the skill, but people who use wood a lot have an eye like a diamond cutter for grain and possible fracture points. You don't want a beautifully shaped/carved toy to split in two on the first hard use.

carm, you are on the right track, but as pops indicates, i'm really just looking to make fairly basic things like pull toys, maybe a wagon (should be easy enough) and possibly a crane.
