How do you make your Martinis?
Posted by: Baby Tats

Me...

Bombay Sapphire and martini glass in the freezer. One shot of Sapphire over ice in a shaker with about a 1/4 tsp of the juice from a jar of giant caper berries. Shake well. Pour into the glass and garnish with 3 giant caper berries. Not really a martini, more like a dirty Gibson, but thats how I like it.

As long as there's no gin and no vermouth I'll drink it.

"Do I look like someone who gives a damn?"

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

My father's last message to the world could probably be summed up as follows:

"A martini is a drink made with GIN AND VERMOUTH. If you can't handle that, you're not drinking a martini."

2nd if one is obliged to partake of Gin... Bombay or Tangarey (sp)
waving Vermouth or Tonic may be a ritual but none should taint the

capers in a drink? Sounds awful. Then again, alcohol sounds awful, too.

One martini is not enough. Two is too many and three is just right.

And with respect to your father, chas, a proper martini is made with vodka.

Isn't that right, old boy?

From Patrick Gavin Duffey's "The Standard Bartender's Guide," originally published in 1934. There are about 80 pages of gin-based cocktails and one page of vodka-based cocktails. That's as it should be.

The Bond character was just designed to be a hardass by ordering his drink exactly opposite of how it ought to be made. No wonder he was so irritable.

Martini = Gin. Period. And yes, it's pretty amazing how James Bond turned the whole cocktail (vodka instead of gin, shaken instead of stirred) on its head.

"I like to have a Martini
Two at the very most
After three I'm under the table
After four I'm under my host".

- Dorothy Parker

I thought I did not like martinis until I had a vodka martini. So it's vodka for me.

How do I make my martinis? I don't. My husband, or a bartender, makes them. Left to my own devices I make Cosmos with a bottled mix. That's the "lazy and not thrifty" thing coming into play again.

Okay. Do I need to pull out the old "95% of computers run Windows. Does that make it better than Mac OS?" analogy?

;)

I just don't care for Christmas tree juice.

You could, but it won't help now that 95% of martini drinkers order vodka when gin is simply better. :-)

It occurs to me that vodka was scarce and exotic and relatively unknown in the 1930s which would account for so few recipes.

I prefer the taste of vodka in a martini. Plus gin gives me a wicked hangover. An occasional gin + tonic in the summer is about as far as gin and I go.

first of all, what most of you are using as "gin" is probably pretty close to paint thinner. Try a real gin. Compared to this, Bombay Sapphire is barely drinkable.
