Linksys Router Acting Wonky

Linksys WRT54GS v1.1, Firmware 4.71.1 (latest version). Connected to cable modem. 2 computers hardwired (QS 933 and Dell XPS 400). 4 other computers connected wirelessly (3 iBook models of various vintages and a Dell 4500 with PCI wireless card).

Up until this evening, all was well, when suddenly all the wireless connections went dead. None of the wireless computers can even see the network. Hardwired computers are fine. Thus far, I have tried the following:

1) Power down/cycle the router, cable modem and all computers. WLAN light on router is lit/flickering
2) Disable all wireless security on the router (had previously been using MAC address filtering).
3) Reset router to factory defaults. Repeat 1 and 2
4) Check router antenna connections
5) Confirmed that router is broadcasting SSID

No luck. We even have a PSP and Nintendo DS that cannot see the network.

What are the odds that the wireless antenna or some related part of the router suddenly crapped out? Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks,

Dan

It happens. Routers are fairly cheap in the overall scheme of things. Replace it.

Trying to figure out some people is like trying to smell the number 9.

There have been some reports that the latest firmware for the WRTG54G has been a problem, especially with non-PC machines on the router. Try going back to the older firmware. Unless you need a bug fix or new feature in a later firmware, there is usually little reason to update a Linksys, and each update has a chance of turning one into a bookend.

I thought about that, even though I had applied the firmware update months ago.

I did try to apply an older firmware version, all I get is the message "Firmware Update Are Failed!". Gotta love the grammar.

Looks like I may be in for a new router.

I had that one for awhile too. I just blamed the grammar on the Russian hackers. Mine went wonky this weekend to. I turned off DHCP and just gave each device static IPs and we're back in business.
