79!
Please forgive my angst, but since both of my parents died so young (my Mom in her mid '40s and my Dad in his '50s), this age seems almost unbelievable to me.

Having Halloween as a birthday has been mostly a great thing. It's always a party, except for a few times when I was sick and couldn't stand hearing our doorbell ring as the kids went door to door trick or treating.

Turns out that this is one of those years. I have been suffering from a combination of an orthopedic problem that has caused severe pain in my right leg. It was so bad that I could hardly stand on it. I finally got to an orthopedic doctor and got a cortisone shoot which did help. I still don't know why it's hurting, but I had an MRI a few days ago. Perhaps, that will provide a better solution.

My other BIG issue is my heart or rather the blockage of my arteries. Ugh! I've already had several more stents a short time ago and now my cardiologist wants to do more. I'm terrified that the dye used will shut down my already weak kidney. I only have one that's working at this point.

I was scheduled for an angiogram on Tuesday, but I canceled because I want to see if my current discomfort could be due to either a pulmonary problem or something GI related.

All I know is that I get so weak and tired out by the slightest exertion.

My best friend, since we were 17, surprised me by paying for our dinner tonight. I had mentioned that we were going to Romeo Cucina, my favorite Italian restaurant in Laguna Beach. He called them from New York and when I asked for the check the waiter told us that it had been paid for! That was special and unexpected.

That plus all the Birthday wishes from my friends on the forum have been a welcome birthday present.

Thank you!

It's great that you have friends from so long ago still in your life, Gene. I have friends I've known since we were 10 years old, over 40 years now. They are priceless.

It is what it is.

Getting old isn't much fun but it certainly beats the alternative. Glad to hear you are enjoying your birthday! And sorry to hear that you still have health problems plaguing you.

Ditto Gene! Live long and prosper!

And remember,

Loretta is 84. Her new album, Full Circle (which this cut is from) was the first release (2016) in a set of a hundred or so songs recorded only a couple of years ago. The production is terrific, and Loretta amazingly sounds as good as ever. She is an inspiration to us fogeys.

Keep on goin', Gene.

My brother, nearing 70 now and after surviving quadruple bypass and cancer has a great sense of humor and always tells me: "Any day above ground is a good one!".

Congratulations, both on reaching a ripe old age and having great friends who will go the extra mile for you. You give us youngsters (in our 60s) encouragement.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I think the trick (if you will) is not to express amazement that you are alive, but to look forward to each day and wondering, "what can I do today?"

some of us need to work on that optimistic outlook.

Happy birthday!

If your doc feels it's the heart, best to follow through with recommendations. Don't be too afraid of the dye -- they're pretty good at preventing renal complications these days, and most of the cardiologists I know prefer to avoid such procedures in risky cases, unless the benefits of the procedure clearly outweigh the risks. You could always get a quick second-opinion consultation from a cardiologist on HealthTap. Not the same as an in-person consultation, but it may (or may not) allay fears regarding the cause of the symptoms and the risks of the dye on kidneys.
