What are your dream cars?
Posted by: davemchine
Date: November 03, 2016 02:39PM
I have a three bay garage and I was daydreaming about what I would fill it with given the opportunity. I decided I would keep my Toyota Solara convertible as I love it which left me with two garage bays to fill. My mind immediately jumped to a fully restored Toyota FJ40 and a FJ60. I am also quite fond of the FJ80 and of course the new FJ but I would need two more garage bays. My list isn't very exotic but there it is. What would go in your garage?

Solara Convertible 2007, I'm still loving it nine years later!

I've owned two FJ40's and would love to have another one. This was a great trip.

I've never owned a FJ60 but it would probably be more comfortable than the FJ40 and would be a great winter driver.

Porsche 914. And no, I know they are a Porsche badged VW's, and most are in little bits of rust someplace. I was enamored with them as a teen. I have no idea why. Mrs. cbelt3 wouldn't be able to ride in it, and it would kill my back after 50 miles.

Nice rides there dave! I've been a car nut as long as I could ride in one. "Steer as we drove through town..." that was me. I just about have mine now, a new F150 Platinum Ecoboost 4x4 SuperCrew, gets better mpg than the Toyota Highlander's and 4Runners, and Honda Pilots we tested. And, that thing will tow! Ok, I dreamed about a '63 Corvair back in those days. Hey, that's the one Little Joe drove before Binanza came on! Pa the Impala, Adam the mid size (?), and of course Hoss the pickup. Oh me, dream cars... A Jeep.

I catch myself thinking about cars that I once owned and the memories they bring back. I owned two of these earlier in my life.

It MUST be a convertible with factory side pipes, or it's a deal breaker.

I drove one exactly like that (though a bit more battered) a couple of summers doing odd jobs. Very scary in a crosswind!

No idea why, I know it is bad idea and a junker.. but I was always enamored by the Lincoln MkIV. A family friend had a 73 when I was a young teen and it just stuck with me. Of course, there is always the car I learned to drive in if I truly wanted to torture myself - 1972 Ford Maverick.

Otherwise, I'm essentially a utilitarian car owner who likes practical affordability.

(but for the non-utlitarian cruiser that I could conceivably afford, a Mercedes 560SL)

Well, there are dream cars (McLaren 650S) and practical dream cars that you might actually own. My garage hosts a 2010 Ford F150 Platinum 4x4 and a Monterey Red 2006 Corvette convertible. Both bought new and optioned/ordered exactly as I wanted.

Super Duty 455, my dream Trans Am too!

I had that exact model 1969 GTO (a well-thrashed used one in green) back in 1973, it wasn't that much fun... The one in your photo is missing the hood-mounted tach, that was a neat (though largely superfluous) feature.

2009 VW Jetta 2.0T, stickshift. Looks like a standard Jetta, but has a 200hp engine and handles like a dream. I'll get one when my 2006 2.0T bites the dust, and not before - I'm 100% satisfied with this auto.

Crazy as it sounds, I crave a 1968-72 Chevrolet Nova. I want one more than a Chevelle. Many of the classic Detroit muscle cars had significant components built in Canada. The Nova was only a muscle car when modified, but I always wanted to build a 70 Nova SS 350.

The number scales nearly linearly with the amount of money I theoretically have, fairly similar to the concept of Jay Leno's garage. There are about 80 different cars I would like to drive daily for a month each, before swapping to the next one. I wouldn't need to own them, just not be afraid of crashing or blowing a motor/transmission. A 1959 Corvette like Microman posted is one of those 80. Sunbeam Tiger, Lotus 26R, Lotus Exige, Bugatti 47, Bugatti Veyron, Lancia Stratos, Porsche 917, Porsche 918, Porsche 997 GT2 RS, Ferrari 340 America, Ferrari 250 Europa, Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, Ferrari F50, Cisitalia 202, Lamborghini Gallardo, Maserati 3500 GT, Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, Alfa Romeo 4C. I think most people will get the idea.

There are about 20 more I would like to have replicas made of, with completely modern components and technology to see how they compare with the originals: Lotus 7, Lotus 47, Porsche 914, Porsche 356B and BMW M1 would be a start.

It's funny, most of the cars we dream about aren't super exotic. A few are collectible but most of them are the cars we drove in our youth.

ztirffritz, I would love a Tesla Model S if it came in a convertible but I've sat in one and the seats are absolutely horrible. Like cardboard. So I wrote to Tesla and learned they offer multiple seating options. For a few grand more a person can get plush comfy seats but loose the fold flat option in the rear. That's what I would do.

I'm with davemchine and DinerDave. Life is not worth living unless at least one of your cars is a convertible. Between my wife and I we have three convertibles (though one is not currently operational). That's about the least number of convertibles I find acceptable.

I think I'd have to go with a Tesla as well. Although, for the first time in my crappy car owning life, I am completely content with my current '10 Acura. My only regret is that I didn't get the tech package. But other than that, I LOVE this car. Sure, after the heaps I've owned, the bar was set pretty low. But this car is an absolute joy to drive. For me anyway.

I wanted a convertible, but we needed something more practical, so I had a sun roof cut in my used 2013 Ford Expedition.

I still think the Jaguar XJS convertible one of the most beautiful cars ever made:

You're in luck! That is one of Jag's least popular models plus they were commonly bought by the older moneyed class. This means that those remaining are mostly garage queens driven gently by little old ladies/little old men and that you can take your pick of rust-free cherry California examples for less than $10,000. Yeah, I look in CL from time to time and see those around here, too. But I'm the worst person to have a garage queen (cleaning and polishing are not my forté, the XJS is not a winter car, and i need the space in the garage). And, to be honest, climbing in and out of low-slung cars becomes less appealing as I get older. But they are tempting. . .
