How do you clean your late-model iMac screen?

It seems like there's a lot of mythology out there about how to clean these things, like "must use holy water and a gossamer tissue." So I just got a 2015 iMac and I want to know what I can use.

It's a glass screen, which suggests Windex would be ok (not sprayed directly on the screen of course). But is the glass coated with anything that Windex would harm? Or a coating that would scratch, like by a paper towel?

Lint free cloth and water is what I usually use. I use the lint free cloth I get with my glasses.

Every once in a while I pick up one of those big packs of microfiber cloths from Sam's or Costco. I use a wet one followed by a dry one to clean most anything—even delicate surfaces. As long as it's in new or like new condition you should be fine. Wash them separately, and make sure it hasn't attracted grit if wiping something delicate.

From the Apple link above:

iMac

When cleaning the outside of your iMac, first shut down your iMac and unplug the power cord along with other connected devices. Then use a damp, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the computer's exterior. Avoid getting moisture in any openings. Do not spray liquid directly on the computer. Don't use aerosol sprays, solvents, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide that might damage the finish.
To clean the display on your iMac, first shut down your iMac and unplug the power cord along with other connected devices. Next, dampen the cloth that came with your iMac—or another clean, soft, lint-free cloth—with water only, and then wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly on the screen.

Yeah, I already looked at the Apple instructions but like a lot of instructions, it just seems like it's very over-cautious. I'm really curious to know WHY glass cleaner would harm this. But I'm not reckless and won't use that unless I learn definitively that it's straight uncoated glass.

Wouldn't be surprised to learn that Apple coats its iMac screens with an oleophobic layer to minimize marks....

Word is that the glass is coated. So the consensus looks like plain dry microfiber, or damp microfiber, or maybe distilled water mixed with some isopropyl alcohol.

Is iKlear not recommended any more? Apple used to recommend it. I have lots of it left.

Because it would destroy the anti-glare coating.

I've seen iMac screens after repeated cleaning with window cleaner. The coating comes off in patches. It's not pretty.

If you don't have the microfiber cloth that came with the iMac then buy a set. They're cheap.

6-pack for $3 bucks on Amazon:

Dampen one cloth and squeeze it to make sure that it's not so wet as to drip. Use that cloth to wipe up any fingerprints and snot you see on the screen. Then run a dry cloth over the screen to bring out the shine.

I use the electronic spray that they sell at The Dollar Tree. It even comes with a cloth.

Anti-static monitor cleaner. It's just water and 2-Butoxyethanol. It's a mild cleaner and specifically for coated computer monitors.
