AWESOME!
NYC would've set up baracades, bypassed public transportation stops, and closed off the streets all along the parade route to choke off crowd sizes 1/4 that big.

busses looked like they were going really fast... might have been cool if some of the players got out and walked.

It may take another century to get out of the traffic jam after the parade ended.

Worth it I'd say.

I hope there are at least 50,000 porta-potties along the route. That's one for every 100 people. smileys with beer

Mr Downtown is the middle of the mix. Black has gotta be 'round there, though I don't know if he followed the Cubs. There are other Chicago area forum-folk there as well.

Congratulations to the Cubbies and Chicago. Cleveland knows what an amazing parade can do for civic pride and confidence.

I guess we were greedy hoping for two in one year. cry smiley

There is nothing like a victory parade, especially the first one after a long, long drought. I think the Giants' parades drew around 2 million apiece, into a city with only about 800K residents.

The helicopters and sirens began around 10 am. With Michigan Avenue closed to traffic, all the bus lines and emergency vehicles were routed onto State Street, where I live. Lots of (well-behaved) folks in blue on the sidewalks, and vendors had set up tables selling all kinds of merchandise. The actual rally site was 1000 feet away from my building, but I went out around 2:30 pm to just people-watch for a while. I guess the suburban trains are all mobbed as everyone tries to go back home.

But I don't for a minute believe there were five million people in attendance.

Chicago only has 2 and a half million people?
I thought it was way bigger.

The actual city of Chicago by itself is about 2.7 million, Cook county is over 5 million, the entire metro area is almost 10 million people.

I remember the World Series parades for the Giants. During one of the "parades," traffic was backup up for almost 40 miles. Easily an extra 400,000 just sitting in cars.

It could be there were 5 million were trying to get there. It's really tough getting that many people to a parade route when the city doesn't have the infrastructure to deal that a crowd that big.

I don't know about number of millions, but it's without a doubt as crowded as the city could be for any event. I think the only thing that kept it from being more was people bailing on attending because of how hectic it would be. The suburban trains were full or SRO in the early a.m. and I heard horror stories about people trying to get home. Many suburban high schools had less than 50% attendance. A friend's daughter took snapchats in each class during the day with most having only 4 or 5 students.

On a normal weekday, 800,000 people ride a CTA train and another 150,000 ride Metra trains. Even if we (unrealistically) assume double that many yesterday, that's still less then 2 million coming downtown for all reasons.

When Pope John Paul II said mass in the same spot in 1979, Chicago officials estimated 1.75 million in attendance. Newspaper follow-ups using aerial photos and military photointerpreters resulted in estimates ranging from 65,000 to 350,000.

Whatever the hassle it was all worth it. The traffic hassle is part of the winning experience.

I seriously doubt there were five million, too. But I would like to point out that when my husband and I attended the Ravens parade after the Super Bowl, we walked to the parade. Not everybody at that Chicago parade came in from the suburbs, for heaven's sake.
