Anyone belong to Planet Fitness? Thoughts?

I'm considering joining a gym, and there's a Planet Fitness not too far from my house. Regular fee is $10/month but for $20/month, I can join and use any PF location (there's one close to my in-laws, and one close to my family so I'd be covered on vacation as well). The $20 plan also has unlimited guest access and use of massage chairs (which I can see me using). I used to belong to the local Y, but it was free through work. They stopped that last year. Now, if I want to join the Y, it's around $100/month for a family membership. The extra benefits of the Y are that they have 2 pools at my local one (1 indoor, 1 outdoor). No pool at PF. It's also only a mile away and I could walk or bike there. But as I said, it would be around $100/month.

Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about PF?

I agree with Speedy.

See if they will let you try out a temp membership. It's only worth the money if you will use it on a regular basis.

But, remember, they will still want you to sign something. They may say it is a release if you are injured, etc. But in the fine print it may say the charge will continue monthly at the regular rate.

My at-the-time young adult son failed to read the fine print on one of those 'try it out' teaser rates. He signed something, paid in folding green cash, and got his month and stopped going. He thought he was in the clear because he paid cash, told them it was for just the one month, etc. A few months later he was dunned for the regular monthly fee. He reached a settlement with them where he paid half the bill. Now he reads the fine print! He also never reads manuals, installation instructions, etc. ….

Nothing is simpler than Planet Fitness. I have a $20.00 a month contract that allows me to go to any Planet Fitness. I like them just fine. Lots and lots of cardio machines.

I am about to sign up. probably starting in Dec. I asked and Robert M told me he had membership and cancelled when Baby M was born. he was able to cancel and there was no other recurring fee.

I believe the $10 or $20 per month does not have any commitment, you can cancel any time. I would still read the fine print though.

rz,

Space is correct. My wife and I each had a membership. Ended up never using them. Initial payment was on credit card. Annual fee and monthly fee taken from bank account directly. They wouldn't accept credit card for those payments. Cancelled when Baby M was born. This was a year or so after obtaining the memberships. No trouble whatsoever cancelling. No additional fees. Easy as pie. Your mileage may vary.

Don't know how long it will last (due to what may happen to the ACA), but via heath insurance fitness rebate, I'm able to get most of my membership fee refunded.

I'm a fitness member at my local YM-YWHA. I had to fill out the form and send proof of going 60 times within 6 months. The family rate is $375 and insurance paid me back $300.

Definitely helps. Check to see if this is possible for you.

......check Yelp reviews for your local chapter, if available......but take it with a grain of salt and just use as reference....

i've had a PF membership for almost 2 years. don't go very often but hope springs eternal at only $10 a month. i do like it when i go i just wish i could motivate myself beyond the treadmill in my house.

that being said, i was careful to only sign up if i could use a CC instead of my debit. i don't ever put subscriptions on my debit card. the club here was rabid that you could only sign up with a debit card but i found that by going online to sign up instead of signing up in store i was able to use my CC. this was two years ago and i think some franchises have relaxed about that somewhat. they have been opening locations in less affluent neighborhoods. i speculate that some folks in the near hood are more likely to have a CC than a consistently reliable bank account.

PF is clean. has good equipment in all sorts of variety and the folks are friendly. the whole business model is built on having a large membership that doesn't actually show up but continues to let the monthly fee just ding on. like me. (not speculation. actually heard a news story on this.)
