I took 50mg last night to get to sleep and "boom!" I never went to sleep because of something like restless leg syndrome all over my body. It has happened several times before; maybe about 10% of the time. It is an awful feeling. It's indescribable. And you feel helpless because normally if you feel sleepless and out of sorts, you can pop a Benadryl and go on to sleep. In this case you have no options.

had a '55 Ford Fairlane 4 door that backfired a lot; I mean talk about "boom!"... kept thinking it didn't like being repainted from brown to metallic green. It kept the whole neighborhood up at night anytime/anywhere it was driven. Say, I forget, wasn't the Benadryl a prototype for the Hudson Hornet, or the code name for the Studebaker Starlight?

There's a fine line between Benedryl buzzes. Sometimes it can just make you restless instead of knocking you out.

If I take a nighttime cold medicine, I'm wide awake until lit starts to wear off. If I take a daytime cold medicine I fall asleep but wake up when it wears off. Some of us are like this and usually the labels warn of such opposite reactions.

I take 25mg most nights. When I take 50 I get that thing where my leg feels all weird and I can't sleep. With one pill I'm fine. Try taking less, or even half of one. If I haven't had it in awhile half of one is fine.

I occasionally have issues with drugs acting backwards like Pam mentioned. Antihistamines and decongestants will sometimes give me the opposite result drowsy/alert side effects, especially if I buy a new supply and have not used them in several years.

No. I had taken one Aleve two days before.

Not really, but I've noticed that it's not as effective as it used to be. Up til about a year or so ago, one pill was enough to get me a decent night's sleep. Now, it seems to wear off after a few hours. I have to take 2 if I want to sleep through the night.

My doctor has me taking 50mg of Trazodone for sleeping. It doesn't knock you out but once asleep it helps you stay asleep or you can go back to sleep if you wake up for the restroom. I was waking at 2:30-3 and not able to fall back asleep, this lets me sleep until my normal 5am.

Not OTC but insurance picks it up.

Lessons learned from a sleep lab:
Trazodone does not adversely affect sleep cycles to the same degree that Benadryl/antihistamines do, and so generally is more effective.

Benadryl and other sedating antihistamines could make you sleep 12 hours straight, yet still be deprived of brain-restful sleep.

Benzodiazepines like Ativan or Restoril reduce the time spent in the deep body-restful sleep.

Ambien, Lunesta, etc tend to cause rebound insomnia which can be severe, which is why they are meant for short-term use only.

In general, if you have an ongoing insomnia or un-restful sleep, it's worthwhile figuring out why - consider asking your PCP if you would benefit from seeing a sleep specialist.

(Disclaimer: I do not currently work in a sleep lab or associate with sleep specialists, have no investments in manufacturers of trazodone, etc etc etc)

Thanks for he rundown. I'm not at the point of needing medication but the trazadone sounds like what I would prefer if I did, although the name sounds scary. I've heard enough stories about ambien to stay away from it.

I have found valerian root to be very effective, especially if stress is the issue for sleeplessness. there are many forms - teas, extracts, etc. What works for me is a 2 capsule dose totaling 1020mg.

....Valerian root does work but it STINKS....smells like poop.....get the gel caps if you can so you don't smell it (even with the capsules, you can smell it).....

.....while you are there get some Valerian Steel too.....
