2 more ubiquitous tech eaten by our iPhones : handsets and alarm clocks gone
Posted by: sekker
Date: November 25, 2016 11:35PM
My wife and I charge our iPhones on our bedside tables and use them for our wake up alarms.

We finally dumped our ancient alarm clocks to make room.

We also just gave up on any home handsets - we have some nice Panasonic bluetooth that connect to our iPhones, but we never used them in the end. (I'll likely post on the sale side).

But just like point and shoot cameras are largely gone in our house, the iPhones keep eating all of this older discrete tech.

Anything else we can dump now? Post your ideas here. Happy to clear house.

A few ideas of things made redundant by the iPhone and a myriad of apps:
Calculator
Scanner
Photocopier (use Scanner Pro or similar, print results to your printer)
Fax machine
Intercom
Pager
CD player, tape player, virtually any form of audio media player: Play music from iPhone through Airport Express instead
Shortwave radio (use a streaming app)
FM radio (use a streaming app)
Mouse (use JumiGamer etc)
Remote control for a Home Theater PC (use JumiGamer etc)
Telephone answering machine
and...wait for it...Telephone (land-line)

Add GPS to that list. We have not used ours in 5 years now.

S Pupp,

I have to disagree with you on many items on this list. Actually, I have to very much disagree with you.

> Calculator

It can’t replace a plain ol caluclator and definitely can’t replace an adding machine. I use an adding machine daily at work and an iphone doesn’t cut it in comparison.

> Scanner

Barely and only for single pages. A pain for multiple pages

> Photocopier (use Scanner Pro or similar, print results to your
> printer)

Not a chance. The ease and convenience of a copier, especially one with an auto document feeder, cannot be replaced by an iPhone.

> Fax machine

Not a chance. The ease, convenience and security of a fax machine, especially one with an auto document feeder, cannot be replaced by an iPhone.

> Intercom

Nope. Easier to hit the button and speake. Even the intercom built into a baby monitor is better than tryign to do the same task with an iPhone.

> Pager

Agreed.

> CD player, tape player, virtually any form of audio media player:
> Play music from iPhone through Airport Express instead

No need for an airport express. Just put the music on the phone itself or connect the phone to a bluetooth speaker and play the music. I still need an optical player because I purchase music on CD and rip it iin .mp3 format nstead of purchasing a digital copy only.

> Shortwave radio (use a streaming app)

Don’t use one. Can’t speak for it.

> FM radio (use a streaming app)

Not in a car. Much easier to use the built-in stereo. At home, more convenient to use a plain ol’ radio more often than not.

> Mouse (use JumiGamer etc)

Tried several options. None work as well as the real thing.

> Remote control for a Home Theater PC (use JumiGamer etc)

Tried several options. None work as well as the real thing.

> Telephone answering machine

Not in a household where multiple people call into a single line, i.e. a landline. Or, if you want a home voice mail system with multiple mailboxes. A Google Voice lined used for the entire household with messages being sent to a family cell phone might be workable. Or, if people simple have everyone call cell phones and have private lines only.

> and...wait for it...Telephone (land-line)

Nope. Not if you’re family wants a single number for the household that can be used for calls _and_ faxing. ’course, a Google Voice # and Obihai box will do the job nicely. I’vebeen using that combo for my household for over a year and it handles voice calls and faxes easily.

I also prefer a regular alarm clock over using my phone. Bigger, brighter numbers. That I also charge my phone in the kitchen is a different matter entirely.

Has everyone really removed their alarm clocks? I have no intention of doing so. I want a clock that I can read in the dark without moving.

Also - I really kinda miss answering machines. I often miss calls when I'm not within earshot of my iphone. I liked that I could always see if I had any missed calls with a glance at the machine.

No, I wouldn't throw away the whole cell phone revolution just to get my answering machine back, but I miss it a little...

i, OTOH, hate clocks that glow in the dark. causes me to obsess about the fact that i have not fallen asleep yet. when i stay in hotels i drape clothes over any digital clocks that mock me in the darkness.

Calculator and alarm clock. I loved the old Art Deco/Streamline Westclox Baby Bens but I'm slowly moved to the iPhone when I need an alarm.

I'll never give up my Timex wristwatch though, nor a proper camera!

Not sure about others, but I'm so near-sighted that I couldn't read my large font alarm clock anyway.

Hadn't used it in over 2 years, and my wife has a visible clock elsewhere in the room. Our bedside tables are top real estate so out the alarm clocks went.

Not an iPhone user, but six months ago I went through close to a dozen "alarm clock" apps. None of them would hide all the notifications at the top edge and it made the room too bright without turning the default screen brightness all the way down. So the nice dim red LED clock radio still clings to life until The Google gives someone just a little more control.

I did. My Apple watch doubles as an alarm clock.

The handheld calculator will never go away.

What math/physics/chemistry etc. professor is going to allow students to use their phones during an exam?

I'm a droid user, but agree on that GPS is more accurate and includes up to the minute traffic alerts. Waze is hard to beat.

traffic alerts and congestion comes from your smartphone network/ crowd-sourcing , not gps

That's where the combined gps and traffic from a smartphone is superior to a standalone gps (provided one has a cellular signal).

Robert M, I only listed what I myself have replaced with my iPhone. It has cleared my office out enough that I can almost walk from one end to the other without tripping over something - increasingly important as I get older.

The Airport Express attached to a good external DAC allows a much better sound experience than the audio-out or Bluetooth connection from the iPhone. I store all my media externally, since in uncompressed format it exceeds my iPhone's capacity. As long as I have a wi-fi or cellular connection, I can access it from anywhere.

Cheers.
