Hey everyone! I have a question about blocking rogue events in iCal
Posted by: Jerry®

Long time no see! Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

I've been getting these rogue events in my iCal for things like "Ray-Ban sunglasses for $19.99!" Basically spam and I don't understand how they get in nor do I know how to block future ones from getting in. See this screenshot for more info. If I just decline or delete it a day later it's back in....

Same here. Ran MalwareBytes and got rid of 3 adware instances. Fine now.

I guess I'm dumb but that thread is 15 pages long. What part of it "worked"?

"Create a New Calendar, name it "Junk" or whatever, move the spam event to that calendar then delete that new calendar. I think it asks you if you want to notify event owners -- the correct answer is No. That way the spammer doesn't see that it's a working email address."

Actually the correct answer is "Delete and Don't Notify"

But it worked to get rid of the three here (all for glasses)… We'll see if they return.

So how many of you got this Raybans $19.99 iCal spam?

I tried bfd's method but on my Mavericks Mac I was prompted to "Delete and Notify" - when I did the same on my phone it did not prompt... so who knows whether my address has been verified with the calendar spammer or not.

This would seem to be a relatively egregious security oversight on Apple's part; unsolicited spammers shouldn't be able to generate popups on my device just because they guess my iCloud address.

Someone, as a test, created his own calendar event. He then moved it to a spam calendar and then deleted the calendar and it sent a notice that the event was declined. A better method is to change it so that events come as emails, not straight to your shared calendar. Then delete the email. Apple needs a spam button as a choice in addition to the three current choices (cancel, decline, accept). Apple will have that additional choice soon but should already have had it.

Yes, I got the same calendar event 3 times. I thought of very unpleasant things I could do to the sender.

Got the same Rayban spam event inserted into my calendar also. I basically did the move it to a dummy calendar and then delete that calendar on my own as it was the only way I could make it go away. NOBODY should be able to insert spam into an iCal calendar! Apple needs to jump on this, as that's a very touchy security threat: what else can they do to my calendar? Delete or change events/info? And what else can they do to the rest of the info on my iPhone??

And the info associated with the event was in Chinese/Mandarin....

I unchecked iCloud sharing in preferences. It was the first suggested answer in the list.

I'm glad I decided to "STFF." I was about to post this problem myself.
It is very concerning to me that spammers have access to our calendars.

It's news! [techcrunch.com]

4 method of resolution in the article:
-turn off calendar syncing (only viable if you don't use iCloud for calendars.)
-decline (BAD choice - notifies sender; this really needs a SILENT DECLINE option)
-[Preferred] Make a new calendar and move the offending invite(s) to it, then delete it and choose "Delete and Don't Notify"
-on iCloud.com Preferences > Advanced you can receive calendar invites as emails. Easier to deal with but less convenient if you like the functionality of getting calendar notifications for new events...

Personally I view the lack of a silent delete/decline as a bug.
