PC question: how to clone HD to install new PCIe drive
Posted by: mrbigstuff

I have a Dell laptop with a micro PCIe and a large platter HD. I want to clone the PCIe that contains the OS onto the platter, and then (possibly) replace with a larger PCIe SSD.

what application should I use to clone the OS onto the platter (and maybe back onto a replacement PCIe?)

Thanks

I used Acronis a lot for drive cloning when I supported PCs. Been a few years, though.

Which Dell? Are you sure it has the right PCIe connector for a typical SSD?

I would normally recommend [www.macrium.com] but it doesn't do well cloning to a larger drive.

No, it has two drives now, with the PCIe drive as the boot drive. I want to clone this drive to install a larger drive than is currently installed.

Back in the day, every time I cloned the internal Windows drive (with the OS), I could get it to work/boot & run, but the OS would threaten to shut down unless I got authorization by calling MS. I did not have a Family package, and maybe that was why MS had to bless the clone.

Another vote for Acronis here, same as Will however I retired several years ago and phase out the PC side of my business a few years even before I retired.

The free version of Macrium Reflect works very well for this purpose. I've used it countless times without problems. (Perhaps not "countless;" five or six times, maybe).
