Public Service Announcement - clean out your dryer's lint trap

After 9.5+ years in this house with a new dryer, I went in and completely emptied the air out line where the lint trap operates.

In my defense, I had gotten in with a basic tool and vacuum in the past. This time, I use a screwdriver and opened up everything for a good lint-ectomy.

Cannot describe the variety of things I found!

Dryer now runs MUCH better.

The reason for this as a Public Service Announcement - as my wonderful wife reminded me, it also means we are less likely to have our dryer set our house on fire (which DID happen, many years ago - some other time for that story!).

Yes, are you referring to the exterior vent outlet? Then, heck yeah, that does need to be cleaned, otherwise it just continues to work its way back to the lint trap inside the house.

Hurts like a bastid...

No, I do that 3-4 times a year.

I cleaned out between the easy to access lint screen (that which you clean out each time) and the outflow to the exterior vent outlet.

Just an amazing amount of stuff in my dryer...

It's a good idea to make it part of the routine to always clean the lint trap before drying a load. But the duct to the outside needs periodic cleaning, too. For some reason, the vent flap on our outside wall tends to get gummed up.

decay,

That is a good idea, as long as you use duct tape and a sturdy garbage bag to connect it to the exhaust duct.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER

I use a shop vacuum. Pretty much a leaf blower in reverse. It won't get all the lint from the walls, so a long handled brush works well

I used a shop vac and went from inside the dryer.

On the hose going outside

just sticking the blower nozzle into the filter trap in the dryer might be a little messy, especially if you blow the hose off to outside - some of them aren't held on by very much.

I sweep it out with one of these on my drill with the shopvac blowing

Great $30 investment

I used one of these a few months back after letting it go too long.
Kind of like Ombligo's.

Fast and easy. Wife immediately noticed better efficiency.

I have it as an annual in my calendar.

And this thing bi-monthly in the baths.

I tie a rag to a rope and pull it through the sections. $0. Might not work as easily in all configurations as it does in mine. I did buy a long, narrow brush for probing the nether regions of the drier itself. I warm my hands first.
