It's been big news here, as James is a senior editor at CNET, and from San Francisco.

I'm sure everyone feels that way, but I doubt that outcome is very promising. If he left the wife and girls to go for help, he probably didn't hole up anywhere. sad smiley If they were found west of Glendale, they were in rough country. (And certainly not a route I would have used to cut over to the coast from I-5 in a stormy November.)

I know that area a bit... lived in Grants Pass for a year and change.

Highway 199 from I-5 to Highway 101 has improved dramatically in the last 20 years... if they were on 199, there shouldn't have been any problem at all.
However, if they got OFF 199 onto a side road... there's a LOT of seldom traveled wilderness area up that way, and you could get in big trouble getting lost up there.

Some folks don't realize that huge swaths of the western states have ZERO cell phone coverage, and barely any rescue radio or CB coverage either, due to terrain.
You can get real lonely REAL fast in Northern California, and MOST of Oregon.

Thinking good thoughts, but AlphaDog is right... there may be no happy ending here.

Perhaps AlphaDog, but let us not give up hope until this is concluded. I must confess I gave little chance for any of them to be found alive when I first read about this a few days ago. I am very pleased to see that I was wrong.

A man's love for his family can be a strong force. I hope he still surprises us all.

First rule after getting stuck:
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR! Stay put and let the rescuers find you. It is like boyscouts 101.

Hope he survives but my money is on finding the remains within a 5 mile radius of the car.

Eh, depends upon where you are. If you're in a rarely traveled area its a good idea to know how far you are from a boundary and hopefully a major road. Then if you get really really lost (or stuck) you can just walk in a cardinal direction.

...but you probably don't even consider these things when two young daughters are involved.

I bet their car broke down in the middle of nowhere..

Don't think it depends. It is pretty much a fact, it is like the first rule of survival.

Ask any person who works at search and rescue and they always say, stay put. The car provides shelter from the elements, much easier to see from the air than a single person walking alone etc.

The hard part in the situation is being able to do nothing instead of trying to do something.

weapon;

MOST of the time, I'd 100% agree with you...

But you need to be aware that there ARE cases where "staying put" is the best way to die alone in the wilderness...

I don't know THIS case, so I won't speak about it, but about 8 years ago a friend of mine and I decided to do some exploring of some of the "less traveled" roads in our county here in far-northern california.

We grabbed some lunch "to go" and set out..
We saw the sign that said "Kings Range National Forest" and the sign that said "Pavement Ends, No Services next 100 miles".
After about 3 hours... we were aware that we hadn't seen another car. At all.
We're on a road that's a VERY thin grey line on the map, in a car, crossing STREAMS that are going ACROSS the road... there is NO ONE else out there for 50-80 miles in ANY direction... Not so much a "road" as it was a "vehicle trail".
No one knew we were out there.
We had no CB or other radio, and at that time (8 years ago) the nearest cell phone tower was about 120 miles north, or 200 more miles south.. probably 400 or more east, and the Pacific was not more than 5-10 miles west.

Fortunately, it was mid summer, and had we broken down, we COULD have walked out following the road, over a couple days.
Had we been stuck there over the WINTER... putting aside the fact that anyone with half a brain would be stupid to try that road in winter... it would be a case of "find a way to walk your ass out or die there slowly".

For our next couple "exploration" trips, we filed a flight plan with a friend, took a CB, and tossed a few things in the car (map, compass, blankets, extra water, and some MRE's). Would have been smart to take something other than my friends Mitsubishi Eclipse for those kind of roads too... but hey, we're not THAT smart!

In order to "expect" a rescue, when staying put is imperitive, someone needs to know what part of the STATE you're in... and that you actually NEED rescueing!

what Paul said. From the cnet.com reports, this guy was familiar with the area (which is why he took this 'short cut' in the first place). Hey, we were getting lost in the woods for years before cell phones were invented, most people who do go off the map know that the cell phone isn't a lifeline in the boonies.

I keep telling my kids- when you go some place, always plan on having to walk back to the last place you saw human habitation. Each vehicle has a road survival pack in it, and when travelling far, we pack water, boots, coats, food, etc. The kids think I'm crazy, but one day they will thank me for it.
