Help downloading pictures from Androind phone to MacBook pro
Posted by: space-time
Date: December 27, 2016 10:40AM
Friend has a Samsung SAMSUNG-SM-G930V with Androind 6.0.1 and a MacBook pro 10.11.6

Her phone is full and we need to download pictures to her macBook.

I have the phone connected via USB cable and unlocked.

I tried Image Capture and phone does not show up.

I downloaded and installed Android File Transfer and it tells me to unlock the phone, to restart the phone, or that no phone is connected. I tried everything and still does not work.

My guess is that there is a setting on the phone to enable USB access to images, but I cannot find it.

I tried these

and

[osxdaily.com]

It seems that both Image Capture or Androind File Transfer does not work.

Will try bluetooth, but I think that would be slow... better than nothing though.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

You could try removing the SD card and copying the files from it to a larger card. I'd suggest CCC so that it picks up the hidden files.

I paired it with Bluetooth.

Image Capture does not see it.

When I try to "Browse file On Device" it tells me the devices does not have the necessaty services.

what is next?

Roundabout way is to send the pics through email.

My go-to Android app for transferring files from my phone is Diskovery - the phone shows up as just another device within the OSX finder, and I can easily drag and drop files from there...

Roundabout way is to send the pics through email.

That would undoubtedly resize them. They should all be backed up to Google. It's easier to download them from there.

Did you try rebooting the MacBook Pro with the phone still hooked up via USB?

Long shot, but maybe…

good luck,

Another friend set up a Flicker account and they are uploading pictures now. I gave up. The irony is that my wife thinks the Samsung takes better pictures than her iPhone 5 and now wants a Samsung!!!

By default, the photos upload to a Google account. Did you try that? Did you try removing the SD card?
What about enabling the USB connection [www.google.com] ?

MAVIC: thanks, will try enabling USB file transfer. I looked for this but didn't find it. There is no microSD card on this phone. Maybe pictures are in her google account, I don't know if she looked there. Her complaint is the phone is full and she cannot take pictures.

The model number you gave is for a Galaxy S7, which does have a SD card. She could get a bigger one.

Make sure the setting of the camera is putting the photos onto the SD card. If the photos are in internal memory, use ES File Explorer to more them.

Update: I just looked at my Samsung S5's stock camera and it does seem to put photos on the SD card. I see a SD icon.

I don't use the stock camera, so I had to check.

Interesting, where does SD card go? I only saw one opening where you had to put a paper clip, I assumed that was for SIM card. Will try to open it when she comes back. Internet is slow here, most pages are hard to load, this forum is still OK since there are no ads or scripts. Thanks for you help folks.

Interesting, it seems SD card and SIM card are on the same tray. Then I will have her buy a large SD card.

IIRC, when you mount the SD card, if the camera has been using internal storage, it will ask you if you want to move it to the SD card. No need for ES File Explorer. That said, if it doesn't work, then that's a decent app to use.

Glad that problem's solved.

I'm absolutely appalled with Apple's support for importing photos on both iOS and Android. It's bad enough that iPhone only works through special apps instead of direct filesystem access (remember when the old iPods actually mounted as a DISK!) It's worse that you need to install random 3rd party bits of software to access Androids - especially those without a sd card!

Meanwhile, Windows is plug and play for both, straight up preview in Explorer. (Unless you need to enable Android's disk mode.)

i did turn ON the Developer and USB debugging, didn't help, I get the same messages. I restarted the phone, no luck. This didn't hep at all.

next is to open the SIM slot and see if she has a MicroSD card in there.

Unfortunately, plugging and unplugging cables is something that's very difficult for me right now, or I would test it out. I've got a SGS7 as well.

no, I know the admin password and I can install stuff on her MacBook pro, but I never installed stuff on android and I need to wait for her to return, I think she is OK with me installing stuff like that on her phone, but I would like to ask permission anyway. She should be back soon.

Save time and effort. My goto app for photo transfer

Photo Transfer

Cost some money but well worth it. Use it on my Android phone. Transfers photos/videos to and from computer to phone, tablet, even phone to phone. IOS version too.

I did. Nothing changed. Do I need to actiavte Write support? I don't want to write to the phone, I just want to READ files. I get nothing so far. I even tried a differnt USB cable. Something is wrong with this phone, it does not want to show up as a USB device on this machine.

Will try a Windows laptop later.

No - no write support required.
Once Diskovery is installed, the steps are:
1) On the phone, enable wifi and connect to the same network that the Mac is on

2) On the phone, turn on Diskovery and either setup a Username/password or allow guest logins

3) On the Mac, open up a Finder window, the phone should show up as a Shared device

4) On the Mac, under shared devices, Double click on the phone and (if you set up a username/password) log in

5) On the Mac, the phone's Internal Storage should now show up in the finder window - double click on it to open it up in its own window

6) On the Mac, treat the phone as any other mounted storage device - photos are likely in a folder called "DCIM"

Tens of millions (or more?) of iDevice users don't even own a computer, let alone a Mac.

If you have a Mac, image capture will show your photos in its interface, and you can copy from there to the finder.

My family never plugs phones/iPads/iPods into thier macs -- even tho they could. I did set everyone up with the $1 50 gb iCloud -- so all our photos go to the cloud -- which can be accessed anwhere.

Glad to help!
I find Diskovery indispensable for offloading files from the phone, especially if they're too large to make bluetooth practical.

Put the flickr app on the phone and let it suck the photos up to flickr for free, then delete them bad boys.

But why? It backs up to Google photos by default.
