Anyone see the drone swarm on 60 Minutes?

The pentagon is testing small autonomous drones that work as a group without human control. In one test, they launched 100 from three F-18 jets.

They also talk about other autonomous machines that are being tested: CBS 60 minutes

Sounds like a bad Sci Fi film plot to me.

sounds like DARPA's Gremlins Project.
The key word being "autonomous", soulless soldiers.

Unconfortably like the story line in the movie series "Terminator."

I'm actually surprised that no one has already commented about that.

But, why worry?

It's the future anyway. Fighter pilots' days are numbered.

These things will not be very useful in, say, a nuclear conflict. EMP / HERF guns also will be able to take their toll as will plain old fashioned munitions. Gotta teach 'em to fly right before you can program them for evasive action.

No, they'll still be around...just not in planes. I don't think they've developed a way for them to land themselves yet. Landing is the issue right now according to the nephew who flies them for the military.

gabester.... um... most all weather military weapons systems are designed to operate in an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) environment. And most military weapon systems are hardened against EMP. Sure, prototypes are usually built without that hardening, but production systems ? Hard To Kill.

Mot really an issue.
Navy has drones landing and taking off all by themselves for a while.
It is just not a critical aspect in this case.....

max- the landing point is about Predators. Most mission losses take place at landing. Underimproved airstrips, etc... Navy drones land into a net. They still have losses. Despite Hollywood, VTOL drones with day long loiter times and armament are not a thing. (Oh yeah, and landing VTOL on a carrier or cruiser ? WAY tough.)

Kinda a related note...the U.S. Air Force is having a hard time recruiting officers to pilot their drones. So much so, they've just started their first class of enlisted pilots.
