MacOS Upgrade Advice...

Friend with a MacBook Pro happily running 10.8.5 has been caught by TurboTax's OS requirement. Anyone care to comment about going straight to latest 10.12? There will be a full bootable backup before anything is done! Next year TT will require 10.11 or later.

TIA

Michael

Running Sierra since the 10.12.1 release on a retina MacBook Pro (MacBookPro11,3) without major troubles.

MacBookPro8,1 w/4G RAM (yeah, I know it's older...)
Mactracker sez it will run "latest..."

I would prefer to take it to just 10.10...

Caught? I would guess anybody running an OS without security updates for 1-1/2 years is doing it for some reason. Ask why they didn't upgrade the OS earlier.

I'm tempted to reply to that snide comment but I won't.

just ignore the trolls if you can, they can't help themselves.

Since 10.10 is no longer the current offering, you'll need to have purchased it (or your friend) in the past in order to install it now. Open your app store app, login, click on "purchases", see if it shows up there. If either you or your friend have it, click "download", then use the resulting installer (will show up in the Applications folder) to install it. If neither of you have ever downloaded/purchased it, you'll likely just need to go ahead with 10.12. Plenty of folks will tell you not to run 10.12 without an SSD, or it will be quite slow.

hope this helps.

How do you equate statement of fact with trolling?

P.S. 22 posts over 7.5 years - how much of chance could you have given the forum before "giving up" on it?

I have no grief with 10.12 on a 2011 MBA, which is hamstrung with a mere 2GB of RAM. It was pretty sluggish in its original 64GB SSD, but with a new 240GB SSD from OWC it is quite acceptable.

I just updated a MacBook 7,1 from 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to 10.11 (El Capitan) on Saturday.
Works fine.

Skip 10.10 (Yosemite — is it even still available from Apple?) and go with either 10.11 (El Captian) or 10.12 (Sierra)

TurboTax will run on 10.9 this year, but will need 10.10 next year - at least that's what the popup told me when I fired it up on my 10.9 box.

10.8 is the last version that still runs PowerPC code. That's one reason to have kept it. Another is that it was stable and good looking. If I didn't need a newer OS I'd still be there.

If your Mac cannot run Sierra, attempting to get it from the App store will direct you to a link to get whatever the latest OS it can actually run. That's how I installed 10.10 on a separate partition. I'll likely need 10.11 (the last thing I can run) soon.

10.6 is the last to support PowerPC apps (using Rosetta).

If you have 10.6 you can download the installer for El Capitan via the Mac App Store, even if you didn't 'buy' it previously.
