I was in your shoes earlier this spring, and although I consider myself fairly adept at learning new software/techniques, I simply could not wrap my brain around Flash authoring for websites.

I have a couple of books, but nothing seemed to help me understand.

I signed up for a month subscription to lynda.com, and the help I got there was AMAZING. I guess I learn better from a "person" than reading a book.

good luck!

Have you looked at devnet?:

lynda, com resources are great. Flash is a pretty confusing app to get started in. If you have the basics down (IMHO, you should get a grip on the tools and basic concepts before you jump into websites and applications-you should work thru all the included tutorials), you can search amazon.com for books, then read the comments and reviews of others.

If you have a decent bookstore near you, you can then go see if the books work for you.

You might also want to research the pros and cons of Flash websites.
