Noise/Grain Reduction Software (Q's & update)

Thanks for the help in prior thread...

[forums.macresource.com]

Tried Noise Ninja on a couple of Baby Buzz's sports photos, and it does get rid of a significant amount of noise and graininess, but seems to do so at the expense of sharpness... could not get close to the original sharpness after filtering, but there wasn't a S3 IS filter package available, only for the S1 & S2, neither of which has noise/grain problems to even experiment with. any clues on how to tweak/create a filter that doesn't decimate the clarity?

I tried re-sharpening after ninja-ing, and am left w/ a nice soft-focus picture. I sense you guys are on to something here w/ this type of software, I'd just like to figure out how to make it work right. Baby Buzz's first game is at 8AM tomorrow, so I may have to play it safe and forego sports mode again. Thanks,

Buzz

FWIW a lot of noise & grain, although nasty-looking on screen, never will be apparent to the naked eye once printed or viewed on-screen at normal magnification.

A few more free demos worth playing with.

NeatImage: [www.neatimage.com]

GrainSurgery: [graphicssoft.about.com]

Dfine: [www.niksoftware.com]

Noise Reduction Pro: [www.theimagingfactory.com]

They all will have canned profiles as a starting point, but for best results you will need to tweak the settings per your liking. Less noise-reduction is better.

You might want to scour the individual software sites to see if any of these packages has a current profile for your camera.

I find that once you use these regularly, you don't really need the profiles, jst a quick pass with one of your previous settings.

Even Photoshop has a noise-reducing filter, and many other ways to accomplish it.

You could do your noise reduction on a layer, and then selectively mask areas that do NOT need noise reduction.

Also keep in mind that if you have a whole lot of noise..you won't be able to get rid of it all and keep the detail and sharpness...If you do gert rid of it all, you will end up with a soft image. So just print small and everything will be ok.
