Print to LaserJet 4 Plus via USB?

I can print to the LaserJet 4 Plus via usb-to-parallel cable from a PC, but when I try to do it on my Powerbook (running the latest Tiger), it gets a Printer Not Responding or Printer Busy error.

I've fiddled with GimpPrint and the hpijs driver, with no success.

Anybody know how to make this print from the Mac?

I would just buy a jetdirect card for it and use it as a network printer. Probably the easiest way to do it. A jetdirect card for a printer that old is probably cheaper than the parallel to USB adapter.

I'm running a LaserJet 5MP via a Parallel-USB adapter on 10.3.9.
Just plugged it in and it worked. I haven't been able to print from Classic though.

Yes, I also have a 5MP, and it works through the usb-parallel cable.

The 4 Plus does not.

5MP here, printeing through JetDirect.

Vastly fewer hassles than USB, and the odd Windows laptop that comes through can share it with no effort on my part.

Do you have a 4 Plus or a 4M Plus? The 4 Plus does not have Postscript, while the 5MP and 4M Plus do. Usually I have found that a message of "printer not responding" points to the system sending a Postscript command and expecting and not receiving a response. Have not seen that with a PCL job being sent. So if it is just a 4 Plus, make certain gimp is sending PCL not Postscript.

Other than that, have you checked to see if you have to enable bi-directional communication on the parallel port of the 4 Plus? Windows drivers usually are not picky about actually getting back printer responses when expected, but OS X is.
