So you miss the 80's?

Just take a look-see

This was 1980. I love me some Irene Cara and had a huge crush on her during this time and this ain't about her. But this video makes me glad I gave up studying dance because I was 21 that year. I wouldn't wear tights and got into a lot of trouble for that. I was "much" more athletic than these guys. This is hilarious no doubt. At about 4:05 Will Ferrel get's popped in the head and keeps on dancing dancing dancing like the boss you know he was.

No thanks, one "80s" was enough for me.

I miss the 50's, 60's, & 70's way more than the 80's.
I also miss beer and single malt scotch.
But no matter it gets sliced, we all gotta play the hands we're dealt.

I would nominate the 80's at that century's worst decade? The 60's was clearly the coolest (I guess imho).

Yeah, gotta agree that it was pretty bad. It got better toward the end, but fashion was b a d.

I miss how I felt in the 80's. Young. I don't miss the interest rates.

I look back with nostalgia for the 80s. But I do miss the 90s more.

Except Irene Cara could belt out a song at the drop of a hat. Not to mention her Academy Award winning song "What a Feeling."

Music in the 80's transformed from radio to eMpTyV. Some of it was good but there were a lot of one hit wonders.

Irene's career slowed way down in the late 80's. Looking back I would guess she rejected someone powerful and they blacklisted her. Youtube is missing a lot of the video versions of her hits.

That was some very wooden dancing. No fluidity at all.

For the popular music of the era, my perception is just the opposite -- the "good" '80s ran from 1979 until 1985, then the bad '80s took over through the end of the decade.

Fashion was pretty bad throughout the entire decade.

Yeah, I was thinking about the world/stuff in general not really music. I agree that music was much better the first half.

Will Ferrell would have been 13 in 1980. Maybe his dad.

Will Ferrell would have been 13 in 1980.

My first wife went to high school with him (two grades ahead of him). His star began to rise just shortly after she and I split up, so I never got the chance to ask her if she knew him.

I don't miss the arms race and perceived imminent nuclear winter.
I do miss the Rubik's Cube being a novelty.
I miss hearing Der Kommissar on the radio, but got to re-experience it in the late '90s when Adam Sandler's film "The Wedding Singer" came out (19 years ago? Good Lord.)

About time for a remake! smiley-laughing001

(I heard "Der Kommissar" on the radio yesterday. True, it was the '80s channel on my XM satellite radio service, but still...)

This.

But not "pop" -- it was alt that got huge. Lots of great early 80s tunes.

Ok, I unabashedly love the 80s, but will agree it was the early part of the 80s. Mostly, it can be tracked according to when U2 started to suck.

There's lots of great music, great movies and even "some" fashion in the 80's. I'm exaggerating of course.

Uh-uh. I can name the exact moment '80s music began to suck -- it was when Starship's "We Built This City" was released. It was all downhill from there.

Alternative was just one form of the era's popular music. Punk was another, and rap yet another.

But it was truly funny that The Airplane got it totally wrong. The city of San Fran ended up being built on software and Intel chips.

San Francisco is built on tourism I would say.

I guess by 'alt' I might mean both of those, plus others as well.

The difference was MTV.

It brought all the 'alt' to the people -- and one hit wonders were bigger than ever.

Starship was NOT The Airplane.

+1, Kantner loathed that song.
