After almost getting run off the road this morning by a moron driving a company truck and hammering away on his phone, I wonder how the phorumites behave ? Try to be honest here, none of us are perfect (well, OWC Larry maybe..).

My wife bought a Pioneer stereo for my car that has AppleCarplay. It's great. Hands free.

About a week ago I was riding my bike (in a designated bike lane) next to a car that was swerving a bit and i noticed a glowing object in his hand and his eyes were much lower than the windshield.

I knocked on his window and told him to put his phone down.

About five seconds later he continued driving while looking at his phone.

Car has bluetooth, pickup everytime.

calling/texting is against the law in CA, not that anyone seems to care.

Be careful! Just yesterday at a crossroads that I hardly ever go through and I thought was 4 way stop, I almost pulled out in front of an oncoming car!!smiley-shocked003 My posts here would have suddenly stopped... I had taken one second to look down at cell phone map! Woke me up for sure.

These days, I wait a bit even on a change to green at stoplight and back off any car moving erratically.

If I get a call, it's easier for me to pull off the road and call them back. Or ignore them, as the case may be.

calling/texting is against the law in CA, not that anyone seems to care.

Calling is legal in California as long as you are not touching the phone (i.e. it is dash-mounted) other than a single touch to activate. I use my car's BT system but only when I'm either at a stop or on the open highway with little traffic. If people call me at other times and the phone picks up I tell them to wait a minute while I pull over.

I really can't understand why the majority of people don't have dash or vent mounts for their phones. They are cheap and much more convenient/safer than having a phone floating free. The magnetic ones are especially good. They also put the phone in the ideal position so that you can see Waze or whatever nav app you use. It makes no sense at all to not have one.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I started with a vent-mount, but found that if I had the heat on the phone was getting too hot for its own good. hot smiley

Davester,

I won't use a vent mount. In the winter, heat from the vent can overheat the phone. That happened when I used the vent mount in my wife's car. I can't use one in mine because the design of the vents make it unworkable. I use a cup holder mount instead.

In the case of my car, I can't see the face of the phone. I have to rely on the voice dialing feature of my car and/or Siri for calls and such. Navigation isn't an issue since I prefer the navigation built into my car over the nav apps I've used on the phone.

I generally don't use a vent mount on a regular basis, but they can be handy for rent-a-cars just so long as you turn off that specific vent if the heater's on. On our cars I have a couple of different kinds set up...a CD player mount and a couple of glue-on mounts. There are also windshield mounts, cigarette lighter mounts/stalks, cupholder mounts, and mounts that slide between dash panels available. In other words, there are so many choices that there is zero excuse for anyone not to use one.

I have a CD mount that Pam recommended.

One place I worked threatened to suspend people for not using hands free, and discourages talking while driving. I usually don't answer unless it is work/boss. If I do answer, most of time I will say I'm driving and will pull over to call back if it's important. Friends and family know I don't like to use the phone and drive. I use Waze over Google or the onboard GPS.

That's when you call 911 and report a car weaving with poor lane control, maybe drunk. Cops might spot him on the phone.

I got rear-ended in my car in Nov 16. The kid got a ticket for inattentive driving, for screwing around with his stereo. That offense in WA State is a catch all. Covers cell phone use too.

Wait...if you have heat coming out of the upper vents, you're using it wrong. Unless you mean you are mounting your phone to the vents on the floor...in which case, you are DEFINITELY using it wrong.

Matt,

You really knocked on the window of the car and told a driver to put his phone down while riding a bike? You're lucky there weren't nasty consequences. As a dad, you really need to stop doing stuff like that. It's just asking for trouble.

Robert
