.....not even worth shopping there since the first bankruptcy.....but looks like it will fade away soon enough.....

RadioShack looks like it's going bankrupt again

....The parent company of troubled electronics retailer RadioShack look set to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time as soon as Tuesday as it looks to unload even more stores.

The parent, General Wireless Operations, has already begun closing 200 stores, the Wall Street Journal reported citing sources, and the company is negotiating with Sprint and others about shuttering more. A spokesman for General Wireless could not immediately be reached.

When RadioShack, based in Fort Worth, Texas, first sought bankruptcy in February 2015, it sold some 2,400 of its U.S. stores to General Wireless, an affiliate of Standard General, which is a hedge fund that led a rescue loan for the retailer the year before. General Wireless has since set up stores within stores at 1,750 of those locations for Sprint where the wireless network operator sells its service and smartphones.

According to the Journal, RadioShack's current management is betting the retailer can be viable long term as a smaller chain. As recently as 2013, there were 5,000 or so RadioShack stores in the U.S. Ninety-seven-year-old RadioShack had been the preeminent electronics chain for decades, selling CB radios and cables and connectors, but the store had trouble finding its niche in the smartphone era.

The liquidation of Circuit City Stores in 2009 was expected to give other electronics retailers some breathing room, but Amazon.com kept eating away at their market share. Best Buy has found its way through the wreckage and stabilized its business, but hhgregg, a smaller furniture and electronics chain, filed for bankruptcy on Monday and said it would close one third of its stores.

Electronics were also a weak category during the holiday season in the absence of a hot new smartphone or gadget: Target said comparable sales of the items fell sharply during the period, while Best Buy reported a decline in U.S. comparable sales.

the beginning of the real end...............?!

Maybe it could merge with Sears...

Radio Shack was pretty nice in the 70's when there were lots of electronics hobbyists around.

Expensive, but nice.

RadioShack could morph into a network of branded kiosks that do on-site replacement of batteries and screens of phones and tablets, and maybe sell some phone cases, camera batteries, cables, and memory cards on the side. The footprint would need to be TINY, and could be located in indoor malls, strip malls, and tourist/commuter locations. Perhaps the store could work with immediately proximate businesses to supply WiFi access codes to customers too - ie, in Times Square, buy $10 in NYC merchandise and get a coupon for an hour of RadioShack WiFi as an enticement to stick around and maybe buy something else from a nearby shop.

But that is a huge change from what they're into now, and Best Buy could do the same thing just as easily with their Geek Squad brand, and has not.

Good riddance- none around here anyway. I pretty much have to shop online to find anything electronics related anymore.

There is one near me where I've bought a number of things over the years. I'd hate to see them disappear.

The only one left in my area (wait, maybe there's two? I forget)... took out all of the stuff I ever bought, and replaced it with a load of crap I never bought. So, I quit even going in there.

The Radio Shack in my little town is in the Ace Hardware store. They weren't affected by the last bankruptcy and this one probably won't affect them either.

In the 3+ years that I've been here, I haven't purchased anything from them.

More of my money as a teenager ended up in Radio Shack's pockets than any other retailer. However it's been decades since I've spent money on more than a miscellaneous R/S part here or there.

I suppose I should at least go into and check out the store I used to go to. But after the bankruptcy when it morphed into a Sprint store, I didn't see a reason to go. No shortage of Sprint stores here to begin with.

I think there's only one or two left around here that I know of. I went into one a few years ago when they clearanced out Apple stuff. I got an aluminum keyboard and a Magic Trackpad at half their regular price. The trackpad is still unopened. That was probably 5 years ago... was probably 5 years before that since I had been in one. I went in looking for a universal AC adapter... it was about twice the price as elsewhere, so I left.

The RS here is run by a local guy, he tries not to hire morons. I get some deals in there sometimes, but more random and unadvertised. I'd hate to see them disappear, even their limited range of parts is better than nothing.

Do they still have a selection of items for the hobbyist? The most recent purchase a free years ago was a coax screw on adapter for an auto antenna. They had it.

Hurts like a bastid...

Only local place that carries the ifixit tool kits. I've sent a few people to them for those in a pinch.

Our last stand-alone RS store here finally closed start of the year.

I hope they remain in smaller towns where they share space with the local hardware store.
