Everything is difficult with only 2-4 hours of sleep, but I need assistance with setting up a new Canon printer for Mavis...

Her Cannon printer was having problems, paper jams and funky stuff going on with the control panel. She's been expressing so much frustration with this that I finally went out and bought her a new Canon MG7720 printer. It a beautiful looking device, all white and really sleek.

This morning I got it out and set it up, so it's ready to be used, but...

... it turned out that it required t least Mac OS 10.7 and she's at OS 10.6 on her older Mini.

I thought that I could handle this because I had obtained the Lion (OS 10.7) installer for my Mac Pro quite some time ago. I hunted all over for the thumb drive that I had installed it on, but couldn't find it. I finally figured out that I might have the original download on one of my back up disks and sure enough, I found it.

The bad news is that I haven't been able to make a new thumb drive installer. I keep getting an error when I attempt to copy it.

Also, it appears that her Mini may not meet the hardware configuration that is necessary?

Does anyone have an idea for a work around or do I have to return the printer and go back to square one?

My legs and feet have swollen up like a balloon toy and I gained almost 20 pounds almost overnight. My cardiologist told me that it's my kidney, not my heart and that if it doesn't subside I might have to go on dialysis. Yikes! BTW, for those who don't know, at this point I have only one working kidney and that has taken a hit due to the two recent angioplasties.

Yes, I'm discouraged and really anxious, which is why I'm getting so little sleep.

It would be great if, at least, I can get a simple solution t having the new printer work for my S/O.

Thanks for any tips!

GeneL,

Get to the doctor ASAP.

I'm sure your S/O would rather have you alive, rather than a working printer!

20 pounds literally overnite sounds like a rather extreme case of edema to me even if you're a large guy
shouldn't you be keeping your feet elevated and not messing with printers ?

Can you download Lion from the App Store on the Mac Mini? It should be a free download, and install straight from the downloaded installer without having to write to an optical disk or USB drive.

Fluid overload that does not respond to meds can be a reason for urgent dialysis for the specific purpose of getting fluid off, but if the kidney recovers enough from its injury, or sometimes just with med changes, regular dialysis may in some cases be postponed or even prevented.

Please see your primary care physician on an immediate basis. Sudden fluid overload like that can become an emergency pretty quickly unless addressed. PCP can expedite treatment by the appropriate medical professional: Nephrologist-outpatient, nephrologist-inpatient, or even him/herself, depending on specifics of the situation.

I'm really sorry to hear what a tough time you've been having. Please keep us informed of how you are doing.

Thanks everyone, for your concern.

I have been on an increased dosage of toursemide (Lasix) and there has definitely been an improvement. I do have three doctors involved, my cardiologist, my nephrologist and my primary care doctor. From what I've been told, the effect will take some time, but I'm encouraged to see the swelling go down and my weight as well.

Health-wise, my biggest issue is not being able to sleep longer than three or four hours. I usually don't go to sleep before 3 to 4 AM, but then I would sleep until 11 AM. Now, I wake up much earlier. I'm feeling terribly impaired. Hard to keep my balance and I will sit and think about doing something and not be able to get in gear. It's a horrible feeling.

As for upgrading Mavis' Mini, turns out it won't handle Lion, so the printer I purchased is out unless there's a way to get drivers that would work.

I spoke with an Apple tech guy today and after walking through the steps to install Lion, it became clear that it ain't going to work. I really hate it that her perfectly good little computer cannot continue to serve her needs. I guess that I will have to see if I can fix the printer that she has been using. It was doing odd things on its screen and paper was getting jammed.

I wonder if Canon will be any help with this? Otherwise, I guess we'll have to consider replacing her Mini. The thought upsets me, because I just don't see the value in the new Minis. I hate that you can't buy a base model and add ram and a larger hard drive. The cost of an upgraded Mini just seems unreasonable for what it is. It seems my long love affair with Apple is over.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Sleep deprivation is terribly unpleasant and unhealthy, and insomnia due to a medical problem can be very difficult to manage. Nonetheless, sometimes a couple changes in routine can make a substantial improvement in sleep quality.

Take a look at this link, focusing particularly on the Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia section, particularly Stimulus control, Sleep hygiene, and Sleep restriction. HealthTap.com is another good source for medical information.

I hope this info helps.

GeneL,
Glad you're feeling better.

Gutenprint has 'Experimental' printer support for Canon MG7720 printer according to Sourceforge

Gutenprint only supports printing, not scanning.

I would probably return the printer and look for one that has native OSX 10.6.x support - possibly a used printer.
