iMac pop!

I fired up an old iMac tonight, I think a 2006 era version. It loaded updates, asked to issued installing updates and stared booting and made. Loud "POP" sound and shut off. Nothing doing now. It's dead. Suggestions? I doubt it's worth putting much money or effort into it.

Any bad smell?
Sounds like a power supply capacitor may have blown.
Don't mess with it - too dangerous. If it were mine, I'd sell it on ebay for parts, with full disclosure regarding the nature of its death. (Actually, I'd probably keep it in my closet with 10 or so other non-working legacy Macs).

Open it up and look for blown caps. Likely in the power supply section. They're often obvious. If there's more than one of the same type, replace them all.

if you solder, wear safety glasses. More caps can pop when you go with heat near them.

11 years old? I'd remove hard drive and call it a day.

just fired up an 11 year old PowerBook G4/1.67 17" (Al) last night. Safari 4 was acting wonky so I downloaded TenFourFox browser. A wee bit slow on some sites. But still workable. Hope it has some life left. Tiger OS starts up SUPER FAST smiling smiley

Tonight I decided to let my iMac g5 to forever rest. It couldn't see the boot drive anymore.

My in-laws are still using the white plastic 20", 2011 iMac I bought for them nearly 6 years ago.

Runs 10.6.8, can also run Lion.

It replaced a 2nd generation eMac. (no "capacitor plague")
