Lesser-known Netflix Streaming Titles: My Recommendations

Following up on the Netflix DVD vs Streaming discussion below, a few recommendations for things that my wife and I enjoyed, but we never would have seen/found without Netflix streaming.

Some of these are exactly obscure – just less well known than the high-profile Netflix originals like Orange is the New Black or House of Cards.

### Movies
Train to Busan
If you like zombie movies (I know there are some walking fead fans here), and you don't mind reading subtitles, this South Korean movie is great. On a side note, it turns out it was good enough that someone is making an English language remake. We'll see how that goes.

Tony Robbins: I am Not Your Guru
If you're a fan of Tony Robbins, or if you always wondered what the hell the fascination is, this is an interesting and entertaining look at one of his events.

### Drama Series

13 Reasons Why
A recent Netflix original show, this focuses on the reasons a teenage girl committed suicide, explained in a series of audio tapes she leaves behind.

Happy Valley
A British drama. Main character is a female police officer/former detective, but this is hardly a standard US-style police procedural. Lots of drama.

The Fall
Another UK show, this one staring Gillian Anderson as a police detective tracking a serial killer through each season's 6-episode arc.

Luther
Yet another UK cop show, this one, starring Idris Elba, is a little higher profile, but all four series are here.

And if you missed Sherlock on BBC America, or want to rewatch it, it's here.

Black Mirror
A creepy sci-fi anthology that makes near-future technology look pretty scary.

The Crown
Netflix original series that dramatizes the life of Queen Elizabeth from before her coronation in the 1950's. One season down. My understanding is that each season will look at one decade of her long reign.

Lilyhammer
One of the first Netflix originals. Steven Van Zandt is a New York mobster who decides to lay low, moving to Lillehammer, Norway.

### Comedy Series:

Santa Clarita Project
More zombies, but this time in a comedy starring Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore.

Schitt's Creek
Eugene Levy. Catherine O'Hara, Chris Elliot in a Canadian comedy series that finds a wealthy family running into money troubles and forced to live in the small town they bought as a joke, Schitt's Creek.

Trailer Park Boys
A long-running Canadian series that follows the exploits of some entrepreneurial guys who split most of their time between the trailer park and jail.

Haters Back Off!
Netflix Original. A Youtube wannabe lacks self-awareness about her talent (or lack thereof).

And More:
I could go on forever –
- All the BBC nature stuff like Planet Earth, Frozen Planet, and more.
- All the Marvel series, like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and more.
- Ability to rewatch all the great AMC shows like, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Walking Dead, and more.

Anybody else got recommendations for semi-hidden gems on Netflix?

Consider also:

The Bridge (2011-2013)

Quote
nordicnoir.tv/tv-shows/the-bridge
Synopsis

During a blackout, the body of a woman is found in the middle of the Øresund Bridge, between Sweden and Denmark. Half of it belongs to a Swedish politician, the other half to a Danish prostitute.

Trapped in the middle of the bridge, a bi-national investigatory team is put together to solve the crime. Michael, the laid-back family man from Denmark, and Saga, the rather difficult single from Sweden have to work together to catch the murderer before his anti-corruption agenda wins over public opinion.
...

Note: English subtitles for Danish/Swedish-challenged (like me).

Also note: FX redid this in 2013 with a US/Mexico border bridge murder investigation but cancelled after the first season. I have not seen this version, and can make no recommendation for it.

If you are interested in Japanese food, I'd also recommend

  • Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories
  • Samurai Gourmet

Again, English subtitles needed for the Japanese-inept (also me).

Luther- find out why Idris Elba is always favored for the next James Bond.

Black Mirror - A lot of current sci-fi is often accompanied by 'just like they did first in Black Mirror'.

The Bridge- much better than American version. Different mental condition. Hugely popular in Europe. Various version made. This is the one.

Happy Valley- won the BAFTA Award for best Drama series

Consider also:

The Bridge (2011-2013)

There's also a pretty good British remake of this called "The Tunnel".

Happy Valley is amazing. Sarah Lancashire is a fantastic actor. Also: Yorkshire accents up the wazoo.

I'll see you again... when we are both like golden clouds on the wind.

Thanks for the additions!
Yeah, I also like The Bridge. I was not aware there was also a British Tunnel. Will have to look into that.

Well, some of them are really good. But that's OK. They're just recommendations, not assignments! smiley-laughing001

What can I say? I'm even a procrastinator when it comes to watching TV. If I had some extended free time, I would be all over these. Maybe.

"13 Reasons Why" was not enjoyable.

From my vantage, it was tedious and inauthentic.

Missed Schitt's Creek. Thanks! Got that on the playlist.
