Sound people...trying to record into Garage Band

Im using an M-audio MobilePre USB (external sound card for what it is) to record into GarageBand from a Roland digital workstation.

Im having difficulty getting consistant levels. Im wondering what the best way is to set my levels. I have, in order of appearance, several items on the chain of events here...output level from the Roland>input level to the M-Audio device (which has clipping lights) ANd then levels in Garage Band itself. I spose Im having trouble with the Garage band levels...they are either flaky or Im using the wrong virtual knob.

Any help here? Im beginning the task of getting stuff off of my huge stack of 250 meg zip drives that the Roland records to.

Thanks

Set Roland output to max. Set M-audio pre as close to unity gain as possible or to it's optimum input level just under clipping, set it's output to unity or again, just under clipping . Set GB just under clipping.

Sounds like you may need a compressor and /or limiter in the chain if the Roland's source is very dynamic.
