They're baaaaacckk. hay fever, pollen, whatever you want to identify it as, the results are usually the same for me. Lots of sneezing, along with itchy, watery eyes. I was happily using generic loratadine and it seemed to be working fine despite it having expired two years ago. I bought a fresh bottle a couple of weeks ago and for the first time started noticing dry mouth and throat after using it for a couple of days. So I decided to try cetirizine instead. It seems to be working better, and I'm not aware of the dry mouth. So for those who are afflicted with allergies, what's your drug of choice? Feel free to elaborate.

Wurm,

You forgot to include "A combination of allergy meds" in your options. I use three different meds and long with lots of tissues and general suffering.

Robert

YUP! 2 different pills, and a nasal spray, and I toss in several benedryl every 4 hours when it gets really bad. This is on top of my 2 asthma inhalers, and a rescue inhaler.

I have had a dodgy respiratory system all my life. People with seasonal allergies have no excuse to whine in my book.

Based on what was high in the pollen reports, it started with tree pollen about 3 weeks ago. I might be clear in another week or two until June, and another bout in late August/early Sept.

Daily Zyrtec + Singulair + Veramyst (+ Benadryl and/or Sudafed as needed)

I wish there was such a thing as an allergy 'season'. Based on my allergy profile my season is year-round.

Was on Benadryl/diphenhydramine since childhood, then discovered that it was sending my blood pressure all over the place.

Now using Zyrtec. No side effects so far.

I take generic Allegra (fexofenadine). I take it pretty much all year. You need to get it built up in your system before it's really effective. Watch out for the anticholinergic drugs, like Benadryl if you're old like me. :[jamanetwork.com]

Neti pot and salt water. Very pleasant once you get over the initial weirdness of it.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Racer,

If I went into more detail, my post would be very similar to yours. I have allergies all year 'round and it ain't just to stuff outside. Inside, too. Dust. Mold spores. You name it. In addition to many of the meds listed, I take Zantac 150 twice a day for allergies. Yups. It helps with allergies in a different manner than regular allergy meds. That it helps with acid reflux is a bonus. smiling smiley

agree smiley

Plus I drink 30-40 ounces of green tea a day (either Tea's Tea or Ito En, as well as frequent (2-4 times daily) eye washes with Systane Ultra. I've had an almost symptom-free season so far, and in Florida, our spring allergy season is just about done (mid-May).

Most of all, no ingested meds.

I don't know which of the above is key, or whether it is all coincidence. Moreover, I started my green tea regiment back in August, so if it is key, then it may be too late for you.

Essentially, I did not employ the scientific method, so causation cannot be attributed with any degree of confidence.

Allergy shots have been a miracle for me. I think everyone who isn't well served by Zyrtec or similar should man up and take a bunch of shots in the arm.

My main disappointment is that I didn't do it a decade ago.

Matt,

I'd do allergy shots except there are two issues. The first is time frame. The last time I was tested, I was told it would take nearly five years before I'd start to get benefits from them. Even then, there was no guarantee they'd be a viable solution. This is due to the severity of my allergies. The other issue was ongoing expense. Just too much money. I've got new insurance, so the expense may be lower now. Unlikely but possible. Since my allergies have worsened since the last time I was tested, I've no doubt the time before benefit hasn't changed. Different allergists have come to same conclusion. Five years is a long time to wait to see if a treatment will actually make a difference. Very annoying.

Similar to TL...
Zyrtec in AM 24/7/365, plus 60 - 90mg Allegra 2 - 3X/week at night, Nasacort when things really kick up, Sudafed/Benadryl as needed, though Bendadryl before, during and after IVIG treatments every three weeks. Thankfully, this regimen has kept seasonal allergies and hay fever under excellent control for over twenty years. The twinges that do break thru are very minor, but I see enough folks around me suffer to remind me of how bad things used to get. These days it seems like they are ample choices to help mitigate allergies/hay fever, so there's no reason to really let it take its toll.

Tried just about everything. ChlorTrimeton is about all that works for me. Nothing fancy. Generics are cheaper than hell. Been around for decades. None of the newer stuff does me any good. Never got to shots, but no other antihistamines, and absolutely no decongestants (even pseudoeohedrine) do a thing for me. Old fashioned nose spray decongestants work, but I got hooked once. Never again. Getting off was worse than the original symptoms.

No, but I might consider the treatment if I hadn't found a non-parasitic means to manage my allergies.

It seems like a compelling argument. Hookworms are not a problem as long as you do not have too many of them. So, how does one make sure that the infestation doesn't get out of hand?

Pre-emptive: I do saline irrigation. I attach this to a WaterPik. I get the premixed saline packets at Walgreens. I sometimes add this.

Zyrtec for maintenance. (Occasionally switching with Allegra. Claritin is considered a fairly weak antihistamine) If I know that I'm coming up on a session of high pollen days, I start with something like fluticasone spray.
