Brand new iMac just sittin' on the floor - day after day...

UGH! This is killing me.

My new iMac arrived yesterday. I dragged it inside and set it on the floor, then went back to work on my old imac.

The extra memory hasn't arrived yet. I haven't fully prepped for upgrading to 10.12. I gotta clean up my whole messy desk and rearrange my peripherals first. My place is tiny and there just isn't room to setup a second giant imac without a lot of work just to stare at it for a few minutes and put it away.

The arrival of a new computer has ALWAYS reverted me to a six-year old on christmas morning and I've ALWAYS dropped everything to get it setup immediately.

I'm just not built to have a new computer just sitting there staring at me...

It's gonna have to continue to sit there until friday - maybe even Saturday.

UGH!

Get some use out of it before WWDC. They are going to bump that puppy by 30Mhz for twice the price. You will feel like a fool, I tell ya'.

Cover it with a blanket so you don't have to look at it, and the weekend will be here before you know it.
Enjoy!

Still a great machine.

CPU wise that's absolutely true. In fact, its multi core bench marking scores outperform my 2015 i5 MBPR, although the laptop outperforms the iMac when it comes to single core benchmarking scores.

The iMac's GPU actually outperforms the laptop's GPU, although the laptop's GPU supports later versions of OpenGL, which means the laptop is much more fully capable of running modern software.

Probably the biggest problem though, is that I am loathe at this point to spend any money upgrading the iMac. What it really needs is a SSD, but I'd have to pay someone to do that, and if I did that I'd want to put a minimum of a 512, and probably a 1TB SSD in, which turns this into a $350-500 operation. This is kind of crazy for a machine that might yield me $6-700 if I sold it.

It's an odd conundrum, since I actually like the machine. It also functions as a monitor for my laptop since it supports target display mode, which is something that a retina iMac would not.

SSD isnt that hard to do, Ive done mine twice.

You prob dont need anything bigger than 240 GB, just use it as a system only drive and keep the 1 TB HDD as storage for everything else.

Worst case, use a small SSD and boot externally via USB 2 or FW800. It really does make a difference.

$1500 is about as cheap as you are going to find a 2104+ iMac. Thats what my 2014 was last year. If I could have waited I would have bought this 2015 model.
