eject ext HD before sleep ?

having an intermittent issue when sleeping my MBA when closing the lid.
The sole ext HD on the USB3 port is sometimes causing this error to appear when I wake the MBA later.

"External Drive Not Ejected Properly".

Ran DU last night and nothing is damaged. But it's fargin annoying.
Information I find seems to vary.
Anyone have this experience and/or idea to fix it?

I'm on Mavs ...... don't make fun of me.

Is the external drive a few years old?

Is often a problem with power dropping on the USB port when the Mac sleeps or the drive spinning up late when the Mac wakes from sleep.

Newer drives usually suck less power and spin up faster, so are less prone to the problem.

A drive that old may be close to failure. Consider replacing it.

Try plugging into a different usb3 port. I found this error on a brand new external drive from OWC. Turned out not all USB ports on Macs are the same on some machines. Some have more power.

I've recently started having the same problem with a SD card in a reader.

Jettison is an app that can automatically eject external drives before sleep.

I've not used it myself, but I do use the same company's excellent "Default Folder X" application.

I have only seen that improper ejection problem related to sleep in OS versions after Snow Leopard (not sure about where it started, and have no Lion or Mountain Lion drives handy for experimenting). I have been using an app called Mountain to control it. It's made by appgineers.de.

thanks all. Not port related, tried that. Not Energy Saver.
Saw Jettison and another, Undock?
Didn't see Mountain. I'll look at it.

Running El Capitan 10.11.6, I've started seeing this occur after installing Security Update 2017-002.
