How long does your oven take to preheat?
Posted by: C(-)ris

I mentioned previously that my oven takes forever to preheat. I couldn't find a spec for that but I think there is a wide variety.. It is an electric stove from 2011. I'm curious how long it takes others to preheat their ovens to 450 degrees. Age and if it is gas or electric would be good to know as well.

2016 electric Samsung to 425 is about 7 minutes. Might help that it is a convection.

1998 GE Profile. Perhaps 6 minutes to 350. But since its convection I just set it, put the pan in, and set the timer for non convection time. Usually works out OK.

~30 year old Jenn-Air electric takes about 7 minutes, I haven't timed it exactly. One place I lived had 208 Volt service and the 240 V oven took about 14 minutes to heat up. My parents had a 1920's Wedgewood gas stove that could take 20 minutes to reach a somewhat constant temp.

Less than 10m.

Gas.

My old electric used to show the pre-heating light the whole time that it was powered on. Never had a decent electric stove or oven.

Gas rulez.

I learned the hard way that an oven can claim it's preheated, but unless you have an oven thermometer in there to check, you don't really know.

Wurm,

So true. We have an old Magic Chef oven in our current place. Not sure exactly how long it is supposed to take to preheat. I decided 10 minutes was a solid number, regardless of it's actually preheat time. The Breville countertop oven varies. I don't have to set a timer for it. I turn it on, it preheats and lets me know when it's ready for me to put in the food.

Same here.
I used a Fluke thermocouple add-on for my DVM to test it.
Just setting to 400F, after 11 minutes warm-up the oven's reported temp was 400F and measured temp was 401F.
Setting to "Fast Preheat," the oven's reported temp was 400F and measured temp was 247F.

Electric
GE preheat to 450 is about 8-10 minutes.
Wife says our old GE (24 years) it replaced would preheat in half the time and that's one thing she dislikes. She also dislikes the cool down fans that run after the oven is shut off -- last about 5 minutes. However, I think the cool down fans are to protect the electronics. Had to replace that unit twice in the old stove --- not cheap. That would happen not long after using the self-cleaning setting -- no longer use that setting.

I have a new Samsung double oven and the top oven gets to 350°F in just under 2 minutes. The bottom oven takes about 4 minutes to reach 350°F. I think to reach 450°F would take another 60-75 seconds on the top oven

Interesting. Mine takes almost 20 minutes to preheat to 450. I need to check my service and see if it is 208.

2003 Whirlpool Convection Gas Stove/Electric Oven

Takes about 12 minutes to preheat on convection bake or 6 minutes on convection roast.

So we generally preheat in roast mode then switch to bake if we are baking.

We have an older Kenmore electric that was here when I bought the house back in '99. I just flip it on to the temp I want and wait about 10 minutes. I can't say for sure if it gets to the exact temp that I set, but it seems to work.

After using a gas stove all my life, it was a learning experience switching to electric. I have it down pretty much now.

Well, I have a very high quality Dacor oven that I really like. But it takes about 12-15 minutes to pre-heat to 350. However, it is really 350. Most baking instructions like to see the oven stable at temp for 20-30 minutes before baking that delicious cake, etc.
