Why does Disney/Pixar hate me?
Posted by: deckeda
Date: December 14, 2006 01:26PM
Dear Mr. Jobs,

All I wanna do --- honest @#$%& --- is make a BACKUP copy before my kid scratches the SECOND "Cars". I beseech you, does buying two of the silly DVDs entitle me to a lousy rip without your so-called "bad sectors?"

Yup, but you may have to use a PC to do it.

I am going to be in the same situation as deckeda.

I always try to burn a copy of a new DVD so they can abuse the hell out of the copy and I keep the original in mint condition.

I suppose this method doesn't fall under "Fair Use"?

him carry me, and yet assure myself and others
that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his

You tried extracting just the feature? I was able to rip it the day it came out, right onto my iPod. Just the movie though - not a full disc copy.

Good Luck!

that is why I am an advocate of the HD DVDs having a case/shutter permanently on the DVDs. So damage, esp with rentals, will be eliminated. Think sony 3.5" floppy 'case'

Making a copy for the said reasons is certainly Fair Use. What needs to change about this is Fare Use is just as much of a legal requirement as the rest of the DMCA which the big corps use to strong arm consumers. But the average joe doesn't have the funds to sue big companies over it. I wonder how long it will be before there's a class-action suit over it.

That wouldn't really eliminate the reasons for making a copy, especially with children around. Kids would still find a way to damage it, or lose it.

I'm 100% with SteveJobs on this one.

Bit of lore; this was actually planned with the CD ages ago. They nixed it for two reasons; (a) cost of producing the units and (b) planned obsolecense -- why give the buyers something they'd never ever need to replace?

And FWIW, I have three kids; I must be lucky in that over the years I've had maybe three discs get scratched and become unplayable. They're really good with them.

I was able to do a full disk copy using MTR. Is this something to CDs where some would have protection and others didn't? Or could it be the DVD drive?

What I would like to be able to do, however, is buy a f**king Winnie the Pooh disc for my 2-year old. Apparently, Disney doesn't want to sell these to kids born in the year of the Monkey. Guess I'll just have to rent and rip. Yeah, the "vault" is a good idea for business...

ps - I guess what I'm trying to say is Pixar doesn't hate you, Disney does smiling smiley

Just read about ARccOS copy-protection. Score one for reading the directions. Hopefully that's the key.

MTR directions say to " ... Choose 'Delete' [i.e., the VOB] if you are doing a Movie Only compression afterwards using DVD2OneX or Popcorn, and choose 'Pad' if you are doing a Full Disc. "

So I guess I have some experimenting to do. I guess the assumption is to choose one of the two ARccOS modes when ripping when you know it's copy-protected?

you must be using the old 2.6.6 version. The 3.0r13 beta works better.

Disney does release them in "limited editions" and charge you $29.99 or more, because they can. grinning smiley. If they sold them all the time, the price would fall to ridiculous levels. They have to limit the quantities in the market to be able to screw you when they do decide to release them.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that DVD-RAM utilizes the caddy, but I've never owned one myself. CD's and DVD's certainly are more sexy without one though, probably helped with adoption rates when they stopped using caddies.

2.6.6

Found a copy of v.3; don't know if it's 3.0r13. Doesn't run past the initial screen.

Update --- just because posting is free.

Doesn't crash at launch if there's no DVD in the drive ...

Doesn't crash if Prescan is unselected ...

Doesn't crash if ripping the whole disk instead of main feature ...

But doing all of the above netted me a copy, via Toast 7, of Finding Nemo. So that bodes well for Cars hopefully.
