GameStop + Refurb + Xbox 360 = Yea or Nay?

Been missing having some kind of gaming outlet and may have a few shekels to splurge with soon. To a certain extent, this is an experiment to see if I'll even like gaming on a console, so I'm limiting my budget for now.

I had an opportunity awhile back to spend a really short time gaming on a console and controller set up and didn't love it. But that time was so brief I want to see if I can acclimate.

Is GameStop a reliable enough vendor? Is an Xbox 360 okay? Was the 'Red Ring of Death' still a thing with the 360? I'm used to gaming on a computer and tend to ride'em hard and put'em away wet. Are consoles up to that? Are Steam games available on consoles?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Get a late model 360, redesigned not to have thermal problems. The ps3 is a good value, too.

From what I've seen, a game system is about the same as PC based one except for the control pad. Why not just get a gamepad controller to see if you will like that.

Here is the MS 360 style one for less than $40

Gamestop is okay. There are other buy back places too. RROD was definitely a thing, but pretty much every 360 that failed has been repaired / replaced by now. It was bad thermodynamics and low melting point surface mount solder... sort of like the 'cook your macbook' problem Apple had.

The 360 is a good starting point because you don't *have* to have an Xbox live account to use one. It helps, but many games can be played single player offline. The online stuff is , well, engaging. As long as you don't mind getting cussed at by a bunch of teenagers.

Thanks guys.

Not going for the controller only thing because I don't have a game worthy PC at the moment, and there's also the thing that 'try console gaming' is one of the items on my tech bucket list.

Thought about getting a current generation box, but decided to set my budget at $150 this go round. If I get hooked I'll do a deep dive and decide Xbox vs. PlayStation (The new Nintendo unit doesn't do much for me). If I don't, I'll use the hundred bucks I'm not not spending now as seed money for a respectable gaming PC.

For now, it looks like the first order of business is to how to identify and obtain a late model 360. I'm dying to get my hands on the follow-ups to Deus Ex, my first big game love (Along with Oni). startrek 16
