Ripping Audio from DVDs update

Here's the original thread. Thanks for all the suggestions.

[forums.macresource.com]

So I thought to myself as I put on the Captain Obvious costume: Maybe I should have VLC open and running when Handbrake was opened and running. Maybe that would make HB see VLC and be able to rip DVDs. Aha!!!!!!

No such luck.

Still extremely pixelated and static noise for sound track. Not sure why HB is not ripping the DVDs like so many say it will. I so wanted that to work! Guess I search for the other solutions or pony up cash for something like Mac DVD Ripper Pro or some such title that claims to do all that.

MakeMKV is free and rips everything I throw at it, DVDs and BDs.

[handbrake.fr]
"HandBrake also does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind. It does not work with video files employing Digital Rights Management (DRM). This includes but is not limited to, copy protected content from iTunes, Amazon Video, Netflix, or other online providers, and many commercial DVD and Blu-ray discs.

Applications such as AnyDVD HD for Windows and MakeMKV for Linux, Mac, and Windows can create copies of DVD and Blu-ray discs that HandBrake can open, reducing wear on the original discs and often fixing errors due to poorly mastered or otherwise broken discs.1

Do not use HandBrake or any other application to copy materials you do not own or have the right to copy. If you are uncertain about your right to copy any material, you should contact your legal advisor."

BTW, I read your original thread earlier this week and could get as far as using MKVToolnix to extract the Audio track only from a MakeMKV- ripped DVD. But the file output had a weird mk2 extension and I couldn't get that into a more normal format like .mp4, even though the audio is in a normal Dolby AC3 format. The audio did play perfectly in VLC though and is a bit-perfect copy of the DVD's audio.

Lemme try again.

mikebw: Yup. Saw that. However, I did get suggestions that a certain file could be installed to circumvent this issue. Then I read that VLC can be installed along with HandBrake and that HandBrake would see VLC, that has that file and then be able to rip commercial DVDs. No such luck.

Thanks Lew Zealand! I'll look into that option as well.

AudioHiJack while not a "rip", will produce an audio file in the format of your choice from any source that your Mac is capable of playing.

"Record any application's audio, including VoIP calls from Skype, web streams from Safari, and much more. Save audio from hardware devices like microphones and mixers as well. You can even record all the audio heard on your Mac at once! If you can hear it, Audio Hijack can record it."

That's the route I suggested...........

Yeah, looks like AudioHijack is the easiest way to do it. Hijacking right now from a .mkv file playing in VLC. Assuming that it captures audio as well from a direct DVD playback (no DVD drive in this Mac, can't test), it should be dead easy. Just capture to an Apple Lossless file and enjoy!

edit: nevermind. I just realized you had your own DVDs that you were trying to extract. Can you extract the video and audio with Handbrake, import into iMovie and then save the audio track that way? That should allow you to save the audio track as either AAC or MP3 I believe.
