What's the advantage of an Aiport Time Capsule verus an Airport Extreme?

Both are in the refurb store.

AP E $129
2TB TC $179
3TB TC 279

$179 is a pretty attractive price for the 2TB model, but if you need more space, the 3TB model's price is just kind of meh.

I've just read the manual for the Airport Extreme, and it says that it supports Time Machine on connected drives. Can anyone verify this is true?

Thanks

Although not super simple, but not that hard, you can upgrade the drive in the TC. $100ish could get you 5TB if you think you need it.

I've seen the videos that show how to swap out the drive, and one thing they seem to stress is that it's pretty easy to damage some of the wiring in the unit.

Yes, it's true.

Airport Extreme has no storage of its own and connected drives are going to be USB2.

So, the advantage of the Time Capsule is no USB overhead, which probably results in better performance, but I've never tested it.

I have an extreme with a USB drive hooked to it (mine is 2tb but a 5tb would be the same). Just plug it in, and point time machine at it. It does use up the only USB slot of the AEex, and I had no success trying to use a multi-port adapter (so I can't put my printer on the network).

Yup, I swapped the 2TB in mine for 4TB, and then again later for 8TB. Although it didn't like the first 8TB drive I put in it, so I had to use a different one, but since then it's been fine.

Ombligo - did you use a powered USB port? That's what I have connected to my AE and am able to hook up HD & printer with no issues.

I've added external hard drives to both a TC and AE. Both work fine. For time machine backups - once the first one is finished! - the USB2 speeds are irrelevant.

Yeah, but that first one is a doozy. There is a hack that turns off TM's low priority that speeds up the process - google time machine speed up. A restart after it finishes puts everything back to normal.

I use an Extreme with a USB drive for time machine and serving media. Works swell. As someone else said USB 2 is fine for backups, and, for how I use it, it's good enough for file transfers too. I'm usually not hard wired, so the network determines the speed anyway. Does AC max out USB 2?

....Time Capsule allows you to go back in time......and correct mistakes in the past and affect the present/future......
