The Mac SE Lives!

Grandson Miles playing Lode Runner on my SE running System 6.0.4, while his brothers Sam and Jeff, and cousin Aviva look on. Miles is eight years old; he and Sam are avid Minecraft players. I thought the old Mac games would seem paltry compared to the colorful extravagance of Minecraft, but Miles took to the SE with alacrity, quickly starting to use the edit function in Lode Runner. Before he returned with his family to Virginia, he had learned Crystal Quest and Dark Castle. The last he found hard, but he advanced several levels, though not (yet) to "find the Black Knight."

I never learned to play those games, but have kept the SE with its Toys folder around just in case. It was gratifying to see it back in use!

The concave metal disk is the top to an old pressure cooker, mounted in the stem of a ham-radio antenna (left by the previous owner of our house). We keep stuff like this around as 'beautiful junk', for kids and now grandkids to play with. My two SEs are a higher class of 'beautiful junk', I reckon.

I remember playing all of these on the Mac Plus at the software store where I worked in the 1980s. Really distinctive sound effects that I still recall all these years later.

I'll see you again... when we are both like golden clouds on the wind.

My first Mac (and first computer). I still have mine. I have fond memories of Crystal Quest, Dark Castle, Lode Runner, and lots of weird little shareware games, many of which were text based.

What was the name of the concentration game that we use to play? The one with the Steve Jobs tile?

Glad you all remember those games. For me the exciting thing was watching a young fellow appreciate using my thirty-year-old computer and software. Miles does have an aptitude for this sort of thing; it is reassuring to know that in the future he will be looking into the nuts and bolts of this computing thing, and not just mindlessly consuming the fruits of the 'information revolution' as so many of his peers will be.

I had an SE and my roommate had a 512k.

I remember staying up all night long playing Dark Castle!

A couple of years later Glider came out!

Me too. SE/30, baby. Still have it! Still works although I haven't fired it up in several years.

Cool story!

Nope. Two separate tools.
